UK Gov't Wants To Block Internet Porn By Default 642

airfoobar writes "Yet another country wants to 'protect the children' by blocking all internet porn — not just child porn, all porn. The British gov will talk with ISPs next month to ask them to make porn blocking mandatory (and they appear more than happy to comply). As an effect, adults who want to access pornography through their internet connections will have to 'opt in.' Their rationale is that if ISPs have managed to block all child porn, they'll also be able to block all other porn as well."

Scientists Find New Target For Alzhiemer's 107

GarryFre writes "Neurological researchers at Rush University Medical Center have found a new therapeutic target that can potentially lead to a new way to prevent the progression of Alzheimer's disease. The target called neutral sphingomyelinase (N-SMase) is a protein which, when activated, can cause a chain of reactions in the cell leading to neuronal death and memory loss. Already a substance has been found that shows some promise in halting the progression of the disease."

Slackware 13.1 Released 155

Several readers made sure we are aware that Slackware 13.1 release is out. Here's the list of mirrors. "Slackware 13.1 brings many updates and enhancements, among which you'll find two of the most advanced desktop environments available today: Xfce 4.6.1, a fast and lightweight but visually appealing and easy-to-use desktop environment, and KDE 4.4.3, a recent stable release of the new 4.4.x series of the award-winning KDE desktop environment."

Unofficial Qt Environment (and Sudoku) For the Kindle 36

An anonymous reader writes "I've just posted packages for installing a Qt-based platform on the Kindle 2 and DX devices, and a Sudoku game to go along with it. The Qt-based platform includes plugins I wrote for the e-ink display, the keyboard, and the five-way joystick thing — so it's a fully interactive and usable environment now. Soon I'll be adding a sample app with source code to go along with it."

Do you claim that an integrated package manager that can even handle dependency-checking for the ENTIRE system (even recompiling it entirely with different cflags in the case of portage) is the same as a program you6 have to download and install yourself? If you don't, then it's not really goalpost shifting. If you do, then allow me to rephrase:

Package Management for grownups

Additionally, what if MS decides to change the way programs are allowed to behave yet again? (I'm not saying this is necessarily a bad thing) Are you sure your package management solution will still be working? I couldn't care less if the manufacturer is Microsoft, Apple, a community project or satan, I just want to be sure that it will work in a predictable and integrated fashion for a lot of time. Windows, with its proprietary format and dependence on the capabilities and priorities of a SINGLE company doesn't really offer that.
