The comments cited by TFA weren't the problem in my opinion. He has a unpopular viewpoint on a subject that a lot of his former employer's customer base feels strongly about but the other comments basically insulting people who don't live in large metro areas are the firing offence to me.

I can't find the quotation so this is from memory but someone responded to his tweet by saying "sometimes the internet is spotty in other areas of the country like Kansas and that's why always on would suck" and Orth responded "why would anyone live there". That's pretty much a big fuck you to a large part of the country. Not a wise move to disparage millions of potential customers. I think that comment and the attitude it conveys is a bigger problem than him stating his opinion about "always on".

Stroustrup's The C++ Programming Language might seem like more of a reference but it contains a lot of design methodologies from the guy who created the language, so I used it as my starting point. I graduated in 2011 with similar experience to you, Java and some C but no C++, and I currently do embedded software engineering professionally.

What really helped me learn the language and good design skills was working with someone that had a lot of experience and who also liked sharing that experience with a newbie.

Is it going to be written in some new magical language that prevents programmers from fucking up and having buffer overflow/underflow or other common problems that you see in C and C++, the most likely languages that this kind of software would be written in?

Just today there was an article on ./ about BIOS infections. Isn't the BIOS a layer between the OS and "silicon". Sure, the BIOS wasn't written to be a security layer but just because a software layer is below the OS doesn't mean that is is immune to being exploited.

Bullshit. Just like normal AV has minimal performance impact now.

Besides all of the obvious reasons that this is just another gimmick by McAfee to get more $$ from corporate IT departments with MBA directors that don't even know what the "silicon" in the marketing press release, sorry "article" means, when this gets exploited and there are viri for this layer I bet McAfee will have a AV for this layer to sell.

The term came about because a bug was stuck in one of the early computers and someone had to 'debug' the computer to get it to work. I believe it was a British woman who coined the term. I dont remember her name right now, but she was a pioneer of computer engineering if I recall correctly.

HTML5 is attempting to fix that issue with the canvas element and web workers (i know its a stupid name) . You still need JavaScript but not Flash, and Google has been optimizing Chrome for JavaScript because they already knew the browser as a platform is the future.

A lot of the content and interactiveness coded in Flash can now be done in HTML5 which should be more efficient. Look at the Chrome store, there are very infantile implementations of HTML5 apps available now, and HTML5 isn't going to be ratified until 2014 or something like that. I hate Flash and JavaScript as much as the next guy but I don't think Flash and JavaScript sucking are reasons not to take the browser seriously as a platform.
