Intel Unveils 'Sandy Bridge' Architecture 163

njkobie writes "Intel has officially unveiled Sandy Bridge, its latest platform architecture, at the first day of IDF in San Francisco. The platform is the successor to the Nehalem/Westmere architecture and integrates graphics directly onto the CPU die. It also upgrades the Turbo Mode already seen in Core i5 and i7 processors to achieve even greater speed improvements. Turbo Mode on Sandy Bridge processors can now draw more than the chip's nominal TDP where the system is cool enough to do so safely, enabling even greater boosts in core speeds than those seen in Westmere. No details of specific products have been made available, but Intel has confirmed that processors built on the new architecture will be referred to as 'second generation Core processors,' and are expected to go on sale in early 2011. In 2012 it is due to be shrunk to a 22nm process, under the name Ivy Bridge."

The series 24 has been consistantly bad with the whole computer thing, comments about just "opening a port" etc. I also saw the worst peice of Product Placement on the show. It was around the 5th Season CTU was under attack from a hacker and an exchange along the lines of this took place. Technician 1: They're released a virus, we better do something Technician 2: Don't worry the Cisco Self defending Network should hold them for about half an hour.

Most Popular Free, Arena-Style FPS? 205

anomalous cohort writes "I am a casual gamer. Go or Chess are my games of choice when I am up for a serious intellectual gaming challenge. Otherwise, I just want to blow off some steam in a free, arena-style FPS such as Alien Arena, Nexuiz, Sauerbraten, or Tremulous at the end of a long day. Either way, it is very rare for my gaming experience to exceed 30 minutes. The problem is that attendance for these games has dropped off over the years. Finding a game with about two humans and two robots is perfect for me and very rare these days. My question is this: What is currently the most popular free, arena-style FPS for the casual gamer that you know of?" That reminds me, how is the Quake Live beta coming along?

PS2 the Most Played Console In 2008 172

An anonymous reader writes "In terms of console usage, the aging PS2 still leads the competition, according to data from US research firm Nielsen. Data the company compiled between January and October 2008 shows that the PS2 commanded 31.7 percent of the total number of minutes spent playing consoles. Only 37.9 percent of play time took place on current-gen systems, with the Xbox 360 (17.2 percent) leading the Wii (13.4 percent) and the PS3 (7.3 percent). Users even spent more time playing on the original Xbox (9.7 percent) than the PS3, while Nintendo's GameCube (4.6 percent) wasn't far behind Sony's new console either." World of Warcraft once again topped the most-played PC game list by a large margin. Tetris was the top mobile game, followed by Bejeweled and Guitar Hero III.

The Best Games of 2008 109

As the year comes to an end, most game sites are putting up lists highlighting their favorite games of 2008. Gamasutra is no exception, but they've nicely consolidated a variety of lists, and included some of their reasons and commentary to go with them. The topics range from the best overlooked games (Soul Bubbles and Pure) to the best new gameplay mechanics (first-person parkour in Mirror's Edge and Spore's procedural content generation) to the best overall games of the year (Fallout 3, World of Goo, and LittleBigPlanet). What were your top games of 2008?

Fair points in the most part It'll be interesting to see how the conduit does, If it does what it promises then it could sell well and as a development platform Quantum3 might bring a means to get more developers building high end hardcore games. Personally I think they should corral the original developers of the Gamecube ResEvil4 along with whoever implemented the Wii Edition and see if they can do for the Wii what they did for the Gamecube. I do think though that with the naturally lower development cost of the Wii platform it doesn't take so many sales to have a 'hit' as with the big two.

Actually Resident Evil 4 Wii Edition has sold 1.6 million which kinda destroys your point with it being an 'adult game' and all. I believe Capcom consider it a commercial success. Plus it is a kick ass game. http://vgchartz.com/games/game.php?id=6163&region=All Also check out the forthcoming 'The Conduit' Due Q1 09
