Comment Re:Wikileaks / Russia gave us Trump (Score 1, Offtopic) 187

Perhaps. I see Trump and all the crap that is happening as a good and necessary thing. The timing is perfect- the GOP has a solid and incontestable hold on the House, Senate, and Presidency.

There has been rot and corruption deep in American politics for a while, and that rot has abscessed in a huge way the last couple of decades. If Hillary had won, it would just continue to grow and infect. Trump winning, and the resulting criminal behavior- coupled with the implicit AND active efforts of the rest of the GOP to cover it up or sweep it under the rug has brought it all out in the open. When the Trump abscess is lanced, all this rot will be cleaned out and they all go to prison. And I predict a few Democrats will go sliding down that tunnel with them.

There will always be corruption, but there should never be THIS much corruption. The 2018 and 2020 election cycles are going to be absolutely brutal to the GOP. Its time to fix some of the worst of the laws that the corruption uses to spread. And all politicians, for a while, will be very conscious of ethics and law.

Comment Emmissions restrictions improved auto technology (Score 1) 483

There was a lot of wallowing and flailing about at first. And by at first I mean about 15 to 20 years for American cars.
They wanted to stick to the old tried and true designs, but the emissions were killing them. They tried variants on that from the mid 70's though the 80's and on in to the early 90's. And it sucked. Engines were huge and heavy, but power was small and dissapointing. A Firebird with a 455 pusjing 220hp? Who wants THAT when a Corolla GT has half the weight and more power to the road?
The partnerships they entered with japanese manufacturers opened their eyes. The re-branded models sold by US manufacturers had power, speed, efficiency, AND clean emissions. It proved it could be done. So they started re-designing. Threw out a lot of the old tech that just was not adaptable. Carbs, throttle-body injectors, 2-valve systems, pushrods- it all had to go.

Now we have big valves, triple and quad valves, variable valve trains, variable airflow and fuel delivery, constant sensor feedback to make it all work at peak performance. Superchargers and turbos overcome the shortcomings when big power is needed. And we can still go with large displacement if we need the really big numbers. We would never have the modern power and efficiency if they had not been forced to start re-thinking engine design in 1973. And it still took till the mid-90's to really embrace that concept.

He's not wrong. Speed for speed, a true sports car will perform far better. You will have to brake and downshift to 30 in a curve a sports car takes at 60. You will pass in the straightaway, but how often is that gonna happen on a racetrack?

hellcat or demon are drag cars with very little given for handling. Which is fine, it is what they were built to be. Just don't delude yourself in to thinking you'd win a race longer than 1/4 mile with it.

Submission + - Fake anti-neutrality comments flooding the FCC feedback site (theverge.com) 1

nobuddy writes: Clearly bot-generated comments in support of anti-Net Neutrality are flooding the FCC feedback page. People who's name and addresses are used report they have no idea how it got there.
Search feature disabled, last count prior to that was 140,000 and rising fast. Searching for key phrases in the identical posts tracked the input.

"The comments seem to be posted by different people, with their addresses attached. But people contacted by The Verge said they did not write the comments and have no idea where the posts came from.
'That doesn’t even sound like verbiage I would use,' says Nancy Colombo of Connecticut, whose name and address appeared alongside the comment.
'I have no idea where that came from,' says Lynn Vesely, whose Indiana address also appeared, and who was surprised to hear about the comment."

If you think Harry Potter didn't make much profits, then you clearly have not even tried to look at the data. At all. Just, wow.

That series has profited $6.5 Billion. Profited. Not grossed. Net.
And that is just from box office sales. Video releases and merchandising profited another $25 Billion. Profit. Not gross. Net.

Hell, you could not be more wrong if you tried, with that example.
