The cynic in me says that even if it is a simple patch and recompile for existing android devices, we will never see it from any OEMs--it takes away some of the reason to buy the latest shiny.

Here's hoping for the community android rebuilds...

No microphone headset or bt mouse profile

Of course there's no BT profile for BT microphone headsets and mice. This is consistent with Apple practice.
- A microphone headset would let you make private calls with VOIP apps, which might mean less calls on your iphone, or even not need your iphone at all if properly implemented.
- A mouse might allow development of apps which would require you to use your macbook less and/or not even buy a macbook in the first place.

Usually the problem isn't the left turning vehicle in the intersection when the light turns yellow, but the 3 or 4 other vehicles who pile in after them after the yellow. This shortens the time if the cross street has an advance left turn signal, thus leading the left turning drivers from the cross-street to do the same. Ad infinitum.

Canadian cable provider Shaw posted their new rate plans for internet only (were to start in November).. same thing, there was basically no difference between internet only and internet+cable in cost. I said "see ya!" and switched to a dsl provider at a substantial discount to the new internet rates.

You have to go deep into the Shaw cable website to find the real internet package pricing -- on their main page they proudly announced "29.95" for "Broadband 50". Going into the details:

There are some older packages available, not well advertised, and probably to be deleted in the future. Still, basic internet (when you find it on their site) is $42.50 a month with TV, and $52.50 a month without. That's at least $10 more than basic DSL service around here.

Same goes for oil, gas, and coal--if it's owned by the people and held in trust by the state, as is typical for minerals and oil, but only a small fraction is charged in royalty to the extractor, that Is also a form of subsidy.

While 3dfx clung to a crippled OpenGL interface in favor of GLIDE, MesaGL on windows could run Quake 3 with graphical acceptability on twin voodoo2 cards, whereas 3dfx's driver that they refused to update would have ugly white boxes everywhere there was partial transparency used.

Chrome should allow you to close a tab and anything else attached to it, at any time. The current situation is unacceptable from a user's POV.

You car doesn't call the cops and rat you out for speeding; the data only gets pulled after a serious collision with airbags deployed. At that point it's a legitimate criminal investigation and not simply a matter of privacy.

Works well unless you're in Canada. Then any city in Alberta is "Calgary, is that right?" and any city in Ontario is "Toronto, is that right?"

Now that google has got all the free data they need, they can shut down the service and encourage people to buy more smartphones. It's really a shame, but not unexpected from any company; I was hoping for better from google.

Figures, just after I convinced my father to stop using the telco 411 (and paying the $$$) and to use GOOG-411.

Effectively in Canada there are two national providers.

Bell and Telus use the same frequencies, in fact they have sharing agreements across the country.
Rogers / Fido is the other one, same company, different brands.

The new carrier, Wind Mobile, is only operating in Calgary, Edmonton, Toronto, Ottawa, and Vancouver. They are filling a role like Fido did before Rogers bought them. They run on the same frequency as T-Mobile's 3G network in the USA.

All these carriers use Sim cards.. most phones will run on Bell/Telus/Rogers (850 range), but some will run on all four (Nokia 5230 for example).

For a second I thought this would be about some cruel and unusual punishment in a third-world country.
