Comment Re:Darn... no Mac Mini update (Score 1) 1079

Yup, works great too. My work configuration is an Intel 17" iMac with a 20" LCD attached. There's an adapter for the MiniDV port, pretty sure it's optional. A big step up from the same LCD hooked to a G5; not worth losing half the accounting team for, but close.

I was hoping for an updated Mini, I'm in the market as soon as it's out. Theory: new Minis are delayed until Nvidia sorts out whatever went wrong with the new GPUs .

Submission + - Steven Brust wrote Firefly novel (dreamcafe.com)

Maserati writes: "Popular fantasy author Steven Brust has released a fanfic Firefly novel. That's right, one of the most popular fantasy authors has written a whole novel based on Firefly. Set between the end of the series and the movie, this tells the story of a simple job complicated by "ghosts". Being Steven Brust the dialog is snappy, the action is fast paced, and there are exactly seventeen chapters. The book is available under the Creative Commons license and has been released in .pdf and .doc formats."

Half-Squid, Half-Octopus Discovered Off of Hawaii 170

Otter writes "A unique creature that's been dubbed an 'octosquid' with eight arms and a squid-like mantle, was discovered off Hawaii. The creature, of a previously unknown species, was trapped in the net covering a 3,000 foot-deep intake tube for the Natural Energy Laboratory of Hawaii Authority. From the article: 'The octosquid was pulled to the surface, along with three rattail fish and half a dozen satellite jellyfish, and stayed alive for three days. According to War, the lab usually checks its filters once a month, but this time, it put a plankton net in one of the filters and checked it two weeks later. The pitch-black conditions at 3,000 feet below sea level are unfamiliar to most but riveting to scientists who have had the opportunity to submerge. The sea floor is full of loose sediment, big boulders and rocks, and a lot of mucuslike things floating in the water, which are usually specimens that died at the surface and drifted to the bottom.'"

Novell Bombards SCO with Summary Judgment Motions 98

rm69990 writes "Novell has filed 4 motions for Summary Judgment against SCO, which essentially ask the court to toss the remainder of SCO's case that isn't already being arbitrated between SUSE and SCO. One seeks a ruling from the court that Novell transfered none of the copyrights in Unix to SCO, which is backed up by many exhibits and declarations from people who negotiated the deal. Another, along the same lines, asks the court to toss the portions of SCO's Unfair Competition and Breach of Contract claims pertaining to the Unix copyrights. The third asks the court to rule that Novell did not violate the Technology License Agreement between SCO and Novell, and last and also least, the fourth seeks to toss the Slander of Title for the additional reason that SCO has failed to prove any special damages. These motions follow 2 motions for summary judgment filed by Novell late last year on 2 of their counterclaims."

Journal Journal: Apple-N 2

Ok, I give up.

People who've never called tech support from a Mac or hate rants can stop reading.

The standard Mac meta-key is the Command key. They're the ones next to the space bar with the funny symbol and an Apple[tm] logo on them. Apple calls 'em the Command key. The documentation calls it a Command key.

Say 'Command-N' to a luser [1]. Blank stare. Say 'Apple-N'. New window. Aaaaaaaaaargh.

Journal Journal: A new meme on Slashdot

As a Mac user I've suspected it for years.

There's a previously uncataloged meme on Slashdot, and it's spreading. It's the $300 PC meme.

New iMac ? $300 PC

Computer for the kids ? $300 PC

No Linux games ? $300 PC

New tablet computer ? You guessed it...

Journal Journal: Third time's a charm

Here's a telemarketing situation where I'm just waiting for the payoff. Our office has several blocks of 100 numbers each, most of which aren't in use and are forwarded to the front desk (because a client may have an old number). Some months ago a mortgage company started autodialing our blocks. Our receptionist went from calm to frothing at the mouth in 60 seconds flat, and eveyone else was getting either a hangup call or a voicemail left for them.
