Submission + - Seeking a great Linux text editor

PetManimal writes: "Sharon Machlis is seeking a Linux text editor that can replace the functionality she's used to on Windows using NoteTab Pro. The specific features she needs are:

  • Good text manipulation — things like changing text case, joining lines, stripping html
  • Programmable macros
  • One-click html tagging for things like bolding, centering and adding links
  • Straight ASCII text only (leaving out the OpenOffice word processor)
  • Editing functions such as spell check
She's tried out Kate, Bluefish and ActiveState's Komodo Edit, but she says they don't make the grade. Do Slashdot readers have any other suggestions?"

Submission + - Second life terrorist attacks?

An anonymous reader writes: Yahoo online news reports about a virtual terrorist group called the Second Life Liberation Army which has ignited a few bombs near online shopping districts in a protest against the way Second Life is currently going. It seems that many players from the first hour do not like the way things are heading in the virtual world now that bigger companies also show an interest in the virtual world.

Submission + - Tomb of Mary,Joseph & Jesus found?

Aryabhata writes: "MSNBC reports, that this week the Discovery Channel, together with HarperSanFrancisco, will announce the release of "The Jesus Family Tomb," a television documentary and a book that aim to show that the tomb located in a nondescript suburb called East Talpiot, is, well, the family plot of Jesus Christ. Spearheaded by a well-known TV director named Simcha Jacobovici, and produced by "Titanic" director James Cameron, "The Jesus Family Tomb", is a slick and suspenseful narrative about the 1980 discovery of a first-century Jewish burial cave and the 10 bone boxes, or ossuaries, found therein. With the help of statisticians, archeologists, historians, DNA experts, robot-camera technicians, epigraphers and a CSI expert from New York's Long Island, Jacobovici puts together a case in which he argues that the bones of Jesus, Mary and Mary Magdalene, along with some of their lesser-known relatives, were once entombed in this cave."

Submission + - Domestic spying program to get judicial oversight

Alchemist253 writes: The U.S. Justice Department has consented to court oversight (albeit via a secret court) of the controversial domestic wiretapping program (the "Terrorist Surveillance Program") previously discussed at length on Slashdot. From the article, "[oversight] authority has been given to the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court and [it] already has approved one request for monitoring the communications of a person believed to be linked to al Qaeda or an associated terror group."

Submission + - Fish on Fowl - Cod enzyme kills H5N1 virus

Jon Golden writes: "From http://www.icelandreview.com/icelandreview/daily_n ews/?cat_id=16539&ew_0_a_id=257558 01/17/2007 | 11:56 Cod enzyme kills H5N1 virus An Icelandic cod enzyme might be the cure for bird flu, a recent experiment, which the Icelandic company Ensímtaekni hf. took part in, indicates. In five minutes, the isolated fish enzyme killed 99 percent of H5N1 viruses. The killer enzyme, called penzim, was extracted from the intestines of cod by Ensímtaekni and is currently being developed for beauty products and various types of medicine. The experiment on the H5N1 virus was conducted in London. Fréttabladid reports. CEO of Ensímtaekni and biochemist Jón Bragi Bjarnason said he is very excited about the results of the bird flu experiment. "People have feared that the bird flu virus will change into a human flu virus and now we have a likely cure in case that happens," Bjarnason told Fréttabladid. Bjarnason also believes that penzim might prove a cure for common flu and cold, eczema in children and arthritis."

Submission + - Easy graphing with FooPlot

dheera writes: "FooPlot is a new online grapher that uses only JavaScript and the latest vector graphics support in browsers to display 2-D and 3-D graphs. It also has a point-and-click interface for finding intersections and roots of functions, permits easy scrolling, and allows plots to be easily accessed from the URL itself (for example, http://fooplot.com/cos(x)). With a lot of mathematics packages either expensive or difficult to use, this website offers an attractive alternative for educators and students needing a quick plot of any function."

Submission + - IM & P2P Malware Packs Bigger Punch

An anonymous reader writes: From Earthtimes.org: FaceTime Communications announced its analysis of malware affecting today's enterprise networks through instant messaging, P2P file sharing, and chat applications. In an analysis of threats tracked or identified by FaceTime Security Labs, 1,224 unique threats on greynet applications were reported in the past year, with attacks over peer-to-peer networks increasing by 140 percent over 2005 and multi-channel attacks increasing from 18 percent in 2005 to 29 percent of all attacks in 2006. "The numbers alone don't tell the story," said Chris Boyd, director of malware research at FaceTime Security Labs. "It is more important to understand that, although major network disruptions don't seem to result from malware attacks propagated via IM, the sophistication, complexity and stealthy behavior of these threats make them far more dangerous. "Despite myriad security technologies employed by enterprise IT managers to block malicious attacks, the user is often the biggest vulnerability, especially on the real-time, socially-networked Web" said Frank Cabri, vice president of marketing for FaceTime Communications. "In 2007, the biggest security risk for organizations is likely to be their own users, as employees install consumer-oriented greynet applications onto their workplace computer faster than the IT team can keep up with the corresponding controls."

Journal Journal: Slashdot is a lobbyist

I've come across this site http://www.grassrootsfreedom.com/ which hopes to stop the lobbying reform, which is part of the first 100 hours package the democrats are passing, from applying to normal political organizing. Basically, you'd have to report to the government if you asked people to contact their representatives. So, on issues like net neutrality, or GPL'd software or intelectual property slashdot might be considered a lobbyist. The Nat

Submission + - Evidence that MS violated 2002 judgement surfaces

whoever57 writes: In the Comes Vs. Microsoft case, the plaintiffs believe they have found evidence that Microsoft has failed to fully disclose APIs to competitors. If true, this would mean that Microsoft has violated the 2002 judgement. Once again, Groklaw has the scoop. This information has become avaialble since the plaintiffs have obtained an order allowing them to disclose Microsoft's alleged mis-behavior to the DOJ ("appropriate enforcement and compliance authorities").
