Comment Protective windbreak forest belts (Score 5, Interesting) 150

Tornadoes could be prevented by the protective windbreak forest belts.

In 50s and 60s the extensive forest belts were created in the USSR and since then there are practically no tornadoes in those parts.

Even now, when the land again becomes private property people do not eliminate these forest belts, but upkeep and repair them.

It is extremely hard to charge a cyber-criminal. All one has is a wiped out or encrypted hard disk, a nice businessman with a legit facade (and a lot of cash), and some vague suspicions.

Most of these groups are international, often with an insider say a cleaner who connects a Raspberry PI to the LAN for an hour or so from time to time.

Having an international system of laws would give prosecutors a stronger moral ground and a cross-border framework.

Is it easy say for president Biden to stop illegal drug trade across Mexican-US border? Or for president of Colombia to stop the production? No, it is extremly difficult, close to impossible. Cybercrime is even harder.

And well-known people get killed there quite often too. For example, the TikTok star was shot yesterday: https://www.nbcnews.com/news/u...

People think that it is like an omnipotent sultan in Moscow. It is far from the truth. It is an anarchy there where the government is just starting to tame it a bit.

Imagine an investigator arrives in a small town and everyone is part of the hacking group: mayor, police chief, judge, local elite, etc. It's like stopping drug trade on the Mexican-US border. Besides, these groups are spread into the neighboring countries.

What the US could to stop the illegal hacking activity in those parts is to participate positively in building the legal economy via trade, investment, etc. so that young men and women have other career paths.

What we see now, however, is that the US State Secretary goes on TV quite regularly and talks of his work on destroying their economy via sanctions into a stone age, and that they can do absolutely nothing to the US since their economy is only nukes and oil.

One has to be from really rich family environment to building working relations with others in this way.
