Submission + - Employee Self Evaluation Time

i8msft writes: With the holiday's rapidly approaching every pointed haired boss naturally thinks of employee appraisal. At my place it's "Employee Development and Performance Evaluation Process" time. Too lazy to actually figure out and document what it is we do, we, the hapless employees, have to do it! And naturally, since we're in Word telling them what it is we do round here anyway, why not tell them how well we are doing it.

Any Slashdotters with useful advice and recommendations on suitably uplifting, career enhancing, bonus inducing phrases or language? I need something more uplifting than a piece of paper with letters glued to it saying, "we've got your data", but of a similar persuasive quality.

Submission + - Is your future OS in a virtual appliance?

OSS_ilation writes: The role of the operating system is changing. Where there were once a slew of vendors meticulously testing and porting applications to every operating system imaginable, some see applications delivered in neatly packaged virtual appliances that run on top of a virtualization layer. The OS inside will be a stripped down version of Linux, and the applications will be hardware agnostic. But is this version of the future for everyone? Where does it not work as vendors like VMware, Red Hat and others have promised it would? In an interview at SearchOpenSource.com, rPath CEO Billy Marshall addresses some of these concerns and attempts to explain the growing trend of virtual appliances and the role of the OS in tomorrow's enterprise.

Online Store to Sue Blogger Over Google Ranking? 365

An anonymous reader writes "An online business owner is threatening to sue blog owner Dean Hunt (DeanHunt.com) because he is upset that the blog owner is doing better than his business in the Google search rankings. After an initial threat, Dean received a follow-up threatening to take legal action against him. So far Dean has elected not to name and shame this business owner."

Submission + - The FSF supports the Free Ryzom Campaign

Quim Rovira writes: "NOTE: The related Press Note is soon to be released on both, FSF and ryzom.org websites. Here goes the approved content by now:

December 13th 2006 — the Free Software Foundation, have agreed to officially support the Free Ryzom Campaign with a pledge of $60,000. The Free Ryzom campaign is attempting to buy the game "The Saga of Ryzom", property of the -now in bankruptcy- Nevrax company, and release the whole as free software.

As stated by Peter T. Brown, FSF Executive Director, the foundation considers the Free Ryzom Campaign as "a high priority project for the free software movement", since the aim of the campaign is to publish the entire source code under the terms of the widely-known GPL license, as well as publishing the entire artwork and other content under similar free licenses.

This is indeed a unique opportunity for the free software movement and a great way to raise the interest in the emerging free game software sector, since a full GPL mmorpg (massively multiplayer online roleplaying game) engine would allow multiple universes to spawn, each one evolving following it's own philosophy, with it's own genuine content but sharing general improvements, a bit like the old MUD(Multi-User Domain)-like systems.

Since the announcement by Nevrax of their bankruptcy, an heterogeneous community of volunteers formed by ex-employees, players and free software sympathisers, quickly evolved into the current campaign. With the support of the FSF, it is now expected that the campaign will be able to increase its bid to over 200.000.

Another of the goals of the campaign is to create a non-profit service to keep the current game with it's original content whilst improving in a community orientated way. Monthly fees would be spent on the service costs and game development, to avoid harming the current player experience.

Pledge your support now at the campaign website at http://www.ryzom.org/"

Submission + - Jim Allchin said he would buy Mac.

ballmerfud writes: Computerworld is running an article about a 3 year old email sent from Jim Allchin to Bill Gates and Steve Ballmer effectively stating that "Windows Vista operating system had gone astray and that he would buy a Macintosh from rival Apple Computer Inc. were he not a Microsoft employee." When confronted on the statement, he said he was being purposefully dramatic to make is point, stating "We changed dramatically the development process that was being used and we reset the Windows Vista development project in mid-2004, essentially starting over."

This email surfaced from the Iowa antitrust litigation which is being covered by Groklaw.

Submission + - Geek Fiction: Edgy sci-fi for techies

scuzz2 writes: Geek Fiction is a new series of sci-fi stories with attitude, full of "nerdy" references: Linux gadgets, Star Trek, Babylon 5, programming/hacking and stuff like that. In the first episode, a misanthropic teen virus writer dispatches the central hero with an M-160 rocket launcher.

Classic line (from later in the series): "They stared blinkingly, as helpless and perplexed as a Web 2.0 start-up experiencing its first server crash."

But the author (who also wrote Extreme Programming Refactored) wants your comments and ideas to feed back into the story. Community-driven fiction perhaps?

Journal Journal: AMD on track for shift to 45-nano manufacturing

AMD has said they plan on switching over to 45-nanometer manufacturing in 18 months. According to Dan Hutcheson, CEO of VLSI Research, "It's definitely doable ." "45-nanometer manufacturing will entail several structural changes inside chips. AMD and IBM will also adopt immersion lithography, which involves "drawing" circuits on a chip with a light beam while the silicon wafer is submerged in purfied water. So wh

Submission + - Breathable Hazmat Suit

gustolove writes: ""Hazmat suits to protect against biological and chemical attacks are often made of thick, synthetic rubber that's impervious to the nastiest toxins. But they're also impervious to sweat, and people wearing them can typically only work for short periods before succumbing to exhaustion, heat stroke and, occasionally, death." The new suit that is being created will let the wearers seat out to help cool them inside the thick rubber suit. You can read more at the original article."

Journal Journal: Zheng He 2

Zheng He. Yeah. Pretty convenient. Ships burned, so no archeological evidence is available. Records burned, so no historical evidence. A complete lack of meaningful records from Europeans or Indians. And Xerxes moved two million men into Greece.

Microsoft Publishes Free XBox Development Tools 221

prostoalex writes "Microsoft announced the release of free XNA Game Studio Express tools for developing C# games that run on both Windows and XBox. They're also selling XNA Creators Club subscriptions, which, similar to MSDN subscriptions, offer access to sample code and additional documentation. Also, Microsoft is explicitly aiming towards uniting the Windows and XBox development platforms: 'You will have to compile the game once for each platform. In this release simply create a separate project for each platform and then compile them both. Our goal is to allow as much code as possible to be shared between those two projects, allowing you to use the same source files in both projects, but platform-specific code will need to be conditionally-compiled.'"
