Cable/Satellite television is SO expensive alone, but if you want certain channels, you CANNOT pick and choose, Boomerang, for classic cartoons, is a premium package, the Horror Film channel is a mid-high range package, HBO is the highest tier, but to get an extra channel or two for those is even more! Here's how it goes, with my DirecTV subscription 80$-High tier package for Sci-Fi and Boomerang and such 40$-HBO,Showtime, etc... 20$-Extra HBO and Showtime channels That adds up to...140 dollars a month! This is why I just wanna switch my family to streaming from a media center.

I'm a student, power user, but a student, I dont have a job with complex program requirements, I don't need PS, Windows-only audio software, whatever......The alternatives, GIMP, Ardour, Libreoffice/Google Office....I have 60% of my games, Minecraft,TF2,Beat Hazard, Linux Tycoon (of course), Gmod, whatever, on (a good amount of ) *nix. Linux is heavily customizable, themes, compositor configurations, Desktop Environments, and...best one...you the under laying are not tied to a UI, maybe Xorg /Wayland (never Mir :P) crashes one day ( has happened on a VBox install) and you have to remove Xorg/Wayland and but your repo's back to the stable/LTS branch, apt-get install Xorg/Wayland and be good to go....or whatever the problem is...you can do it on the terminal. I dont speak for everyone...but I think I at least speak for others in my age range who don't need PS or certain software for their job. Just my thoughts

the underlying model is far more advanced than what traditional Unix has to offer.

No. That's exactly what part of makes Windows so insecure.

The security model is so "advanced", convoluted, and complicated, that the implementation cannot possibly be correct in any realistic universe.

There are so many errors and holes in Windows' implementation of security, AND holes in administrator practices, that you are pretty much guaranteed things will be insecure.

Yeah, you can do fancy things like run different services as unprivileged users. What does the average admin wind up doing, when installing software?

Accepting insecure defaults... run the application as administrator... run the service as LOCAL SYSTEM, etc.

GNOME 3.8 Released Featuring New "Classic" Mode 267

Hot on the heels of the Gtk+ 3.8 release comes GNOME 3.8. There are a few general UI improvements, but the highlight for many is the new Classic mode that replaces fallback. Instead of using code based on the old GNOME panel, Classic emulates the feel of GNOME 2 through Shell extensions (just like Linux Mint's Cinnamon interface). From the release notes: "Classic mode is a new feature for those people who prefer a more traditional desktop experience. Built entirely from GNOME 3 technologies, it adds a number of features such as an application menu, a places menu and a window switcher along the bottom of the screen. Each of these features can be used individually or in combination with other GNOME extensions."

If you cant use any "mainstream distros" try a spesific one based off of Debian/Ubuntu or Redhat such as Mageia or Mint, personally OpenSuSe fits my needs 40% of the time while arch does 30% and the rest is a bunch of obscure or unknown distros (as well as ReactOS and Haiku ;) )
