Submission + - SPAM: Covid_19: Japan Extends Emergency Measures

hcs_$reboot writes: Japan extended a state of emergency in Tokyo and other regions until the end of May to contain a surge of coronavirus cases, casting further doubt on the country’s ability to safely host the Summer Olympics, which are scheduled to begin in 11 weeks. Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga made the announcement at a meeting of the government’s coronavirus task force, saying that the measures were necessary because infections remain at a “high level, mainly in large cities.” Japan, which has recorded more than 620,000 infections and 10,000 deaths since the start of the pandemic, has controlled the virus better than many countries. But the government has faced criticism for the sluggish pace of vaccinations, and for pledging to go ahead with the Tokyo Olympics, scheduled to begin on July 23, despite widespread public opposition.

Earthquake S-waves (the damaging ones) travel at ~4 km / s. The sensors detect the earthquake (from the surface), then, if the tremors are strong enough, trigger alerts on mobile phones, with some short overhead. Meaning if you are within 10 km from the epicenter (projected to the surface), you have, roughly, 0-second to "get to safety".

These types of attacks would be extremely difficult to pull off. And honestly any type of fix is likely to include a performance hit

Not sure about that. The idea is not to break the optimization scheme (based on caching some known data), but rather detect the pattern of an attack. That can be done thanks to added logic running in parallel. That kind of attack is based on a lot of repetitive invalid accesses, rendering only a bit at a time, bit values which accuracy is only within a range of probabilities. This will be detected in the future ; a vector of defense could be to cut the optimization mechanism a very short time, repeatedly and randomly, to render the bits unusable. The limited performance hit (probably less than 5%) would only affect the detected core.
