I don't know what rock you live under, but Onedrive is essentially Sharepoint dumbed down and rebranded to be a direct competitor to Google Drive. I have Sharepoint directories synced to my computer using the Onedrive app. So I don't know where you are coming from, but Onedrive/Sharepoint is the most widely used Enterprise cloud storage solution.

And you know why Enterprise uses it? Because for a measly 10 bucks a month per user, you get Sharepoint, Onedrive, Account sync across machines via ActiveDirectory, and Microsoft Office (web + desktop). I am yet to come across a better deal than that.

Email should be reserved for formal, long-form communication.

No? Most places in the world already have region-specific second alternatives. It's Line in SouthEast Asia, Telegram in India...maybe equal parts Telegram and Signal in Europe. They are even shown in the Play Store as alternatives. The user installs it and all contacts are detected anyway.

The only reason people don't move is they have no incentive to if everything works. An outage is more than enough incentive and the barrier to move is very low. As exemplified by the news story.

Are you providing a Matrix based solution for public use, that is free, works on mobile phones, with the scalability for upto 1 billion users? No ? I thought so.

You cannot run a service like that for free unless you have an alternative source of income (Facebook) or tons of money already stored somewhere (Telegram) . At this point, Signal is probably the closest to what you want. No need to reinvent the wheel.

How clueless can you be ?

The reason Whatsapp is popular precisely because:

1. SMS costs. If you want to share media, MMS costs even more !
2. Free international calling. Internet connection is much much cheaper than a single international call
3. Video calling and education platforms. I know relatives in India where Whatsapp is the support platform for online education during COVID times. Schools and classrooms have Whatsapp groups. Teachers share homework assignments and talk to parents on Whatsapp. It is essentially used as a replacement for Teams/.Slack. Why ? Because cellphones have high penetration, and unlike the dedicated collaboration solutions, it is free.

So while I agree that Telegram/.Signal might be Whatsapp replacements, SMS is certainly not.

They aren't slacking off. In fact, they are actively pursuing policies and lifestyles that will lead to their detriment. It would be poetically Darwinian...if only they weren't taking the rest of the world down with them.

Nope. All they need to do is produce a proper Firefox Pro. Charge 12 bucks/year for it, and let their paying customers actually dictate the direction the browser development takes.

Even if 1% of Firefox's 250 million users get onto the subscription, that is a 30 million per year revenue stream.

But no...their head is too far up their philosophical arse to do that.

The point is, the more corporations and communities commit/pledge to using renewable-derived electricity, the more market pressure there will be towards renewable such that the share of renewable increases more than that 20% you mention.

Pledging to use only renewable helps to catalyse political will towards renewable. Pretty soon, dirty electricity will be in surplus, prices will fall and it may become unsustainable to run dirty electrical plants.

It's not rocket science.

You're confusing functionality with platform , may be? What have you been doing for years ?

Whatsapp, Telegram, Signal, Threema, iMessage are all mobile instant messaging over internet services. iMessage is only available on Apple devices, because they never built any apps for Android. Apparently, this is not because of technical limitation but rather to create a "you can't move to Android if you want to use iMessage" situation and disincentivize potential users who might switch to Android.

Note that none of the other competing services do this.

I see your perspective, and it is entirely reasonable. What I think is happening here is that Uber would claim "Uber is a service that connects drivers to passengers. Both drivers and passengers are Uber customers only so far as the provision of the connection service is concerned, and not to do with the rides. Something like Booking.com - it only facilitates the sale of airline tickets -- the actual flight and so on is between the airline and the passenger. Therefore, it is not their responsibility if the driver refused to provide service to the driver's customer (for the ride).

What exactly is the nature of Uber with drivers and customers probably depends on the fine print of the sign-up agreement, which I have never seen. Nonetheless, the literature on the matter by jurists seems to agree that while Uber is not responsible by current law for any of the things, they *ought* to have some liability , lest their abuse their position as intermediaries. New law is needed.
