Comment Of Course Viruses Contribute to our DNA (Score 1) 478

We should expect viruses to be a large source of our genetic material, simply because they have access to it. Viruses are all about penetrating into DNA and modifying it. If the host subsequently reproduces, those modifications could be passed on. Each such modification could: * Be useless junk dna * Be generally useful. Does it matter where good ideas come from? * Be harmful, maybe even make descendants more susceptible to attack from the original virus. * Allow descendants to better identify and defend against that attacker, AKA counterintelligence.

Comment Trade CDs for Cheap - LaLa is Awesome (Score 1) 580

LaLa started up several years ago as a used CD trading business. When a member receives a CD they request, the use up a credit. When a member ships a CD to any requester, they get a credit. LaLa gets $1 fee (+$0.75 shipping) per trade. LaLa provides all the envelopes and cardboard sleeves. It's a great service. I've traded hundreds of unwanted CDs for CDs I do want. Of course, nothing stops you from ripping a CD before passing it along. I guess that business model wasn't as profitable as LaLa hoped, so they switched to offering a rent-a-song-music-locker concept. Now they only market the rent-a-song and don't even admit they still run the CD trading service. I suggest you join LaLa, but don't pay a dime for rental. Opt in for trading CDs, rip away, and screw the RIAA.

Submission + - Demonoid Torrent Tracker Blocking Canadian Users

rebmemeR writes: Demonoid had been offline for the previous 6 days but resumed operations last night. Rumors about the cause of the outage were indeterminate. The site now displays the following note.

"We received a letter from a lawyer represeting [sic] the CRIA, they were threatening with legal action and we need to start blocking Canadian traffic because of this."

The CRIA (Wikipedia) (Canadian Recording Industry Association) is a lobbying firm backed by international music marketers. Demonoid is held to be the second most popular BitTorrent tracker, after The Pirate Bay.
