BUG - "The LEGO of Gadgets" 131

TheBrutalTruth writes "Bug Labs will soon be launching what Webware calls 'the LEGO of gadgets.' From their site: 'BUG is a collection of easy-to-use electronic modules that snap together to build any gadget you can imagine. Each BUGmodule represents a specific gadget function (ex: a camera, a keyboard, a video output, etc). You decide which functions to include and BUG takes care of the rest, letting you try out different combinations quickly and easily. With BUG and the integrated programming environment/web community (BUGnet), anyone can build, program, and share innovative devices and applications. We don't define the final products — you do.'" Looks a bit vaporous, but conceptually interesting.

Submission + - Buffalo and others sued over patent infringement

MisterFuRR writes: According to Buffalo's statement here, CSIROis suing not only them but almost every other major wireless vendor for apparent patent infringement. And apparently they are winning, as Buffalo has stopped sales in the US because of this. I wonder how Linksys/Cisco is going to react.

New Robots Hunt Pirates by Sea 207

mattnyc99 writes "PopularMechanics.com takes a peek into the growing world of high-tech piracy on the open seas, which the U.S. Navy and Coast Guard are looking to cut off by investing in a new fleet of superfast, gun-mounted unmanned surface vessels (USVs). From the article: "The Interceptor is available now. But the USV market is just getting started: Two months ago, British defense firm Qinetiq debuted its own robotic vessel, the jetski-size Sentry. Among its potential duties is intruder investigation, which could include scouting out unidentified boats, along the lines of the raft that detonated alongside the USS Cole in Yemen, as well as offering a first look at a possible pirate-controlled vessel.""

Submission + - Standard Web Fonts No Longer Supported In Vista (hunlock.com)

BladesP9 writes: "Beginning with Vista, Microsoft is no longer packaging the standard Web Core Fonts that it has since the late 1990s. "With the release of Windows Vista, Microsoft has unleashed something quite new on the Web — the "C" fonts; Cambria, Calibri, Candara, Consolas, Constantia, and Corbel." The article goes on to state that "If you're a web designer and not using Vista then this download is mandatory since it will let you see your page as your Vista users see it." This means all of the web sites I have been developing with Arial, Helvetica and Verdana for the last ten years are now going to have display issues because of the new fonts. Lovely."

I can't help but feel that as PS3 (and 360) adoption increases, wii owners will realise that they're a generation behind and the novelty value (The Wiimote is just a novelty IMHO)will wear off. I already know people who are kicking themselves for believing the hype and buying one. Fair enough if that's your thing, but for many it may just be an "ooh, shiny!" moment.

Submission + - Corrupting Free Society, One Child At A Time (functionalisminaction.com)

IConrad01 writes: "Functionalism In Action: Corrupting Free Society, One Child At A Time is a reluctant admission: why, despite being wrong on just about EVERYTHING, Bush has gotten SCHIP right.

For every sequence of events, there is always more than one perspective which can be had. Another way of putting that is to say that the truth has three 'sides': your side, his side, and fact. Today, I hope to take you on a little journey through the mind of someone who hates President Bush, but loves his vetoing of the SCHIP renewal bill.
I know, I know — it's hard to understand. How could someone want to make the children suffer, like that? How could I be such a heartless bastard? Am I truly so selfish that I'd rather have a few extra dollars than see the nation's poverty-stricken children have quality healthcare?

In a single word: No. No, I'm not that heartless — no I'm not that greedy, and no, I don't want to see the poor suffer. And yet, I still stand against the new SCHIP bill. I understand that for the majority of you reading this, this must seem somewhat confusing, if true — so either I'm a liar or I'm mislead. Right?

The notebook uses a custom-written Linux operating system, measures roughly 120 x 100 x 30mm (WDH) and weighs only 900g, boots in 15 seconds from its solid-state hard disk. Asus chairman Jonney Shih claimed the 3ePC would be available in all areas of the world, not only developing nations.

UAC warns about almost everything.

Tasks that will trigger a UAC prompt, if UAC is enabled, include:[3]. * Changes to files in %SystemRoot% or %ProgramFiles%
* Installing and uninstalling applications
* Installing device drivers
* Installing ActiveX controls
* Installing Windows Updates
* Changing settings for Windows Firewall
* Changing UAC settings
* Configuring Windows Update
* Adding or removing user accounts
* Changing a user's account type
* Configuring Parental Controls
* Running Task Scheduler
* Restoring backed-up system files
* Viewing or changing another user's folders and files
from wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

Installing applications? I don't need a warning when I'm installing an application. I know that I'm installing an application.

However, I may need a warning that the file that I am opening has a script in in that could be a virus.

Oh, and by the way, have you ever heard of a malicious device driver?

Windows Vista Keygen a Hoax 154

An anonymous reader writes "The author of the Windows Vista keygen that was reported yesterday has admitted that the program does not actually work. Here is the initial announcement of the original release of the keygen, and here is the followup post in which the same author acknowledges that the program is fake. Apparently, the keygen program does legitimately attack Windows Vista keys via brute force, but the chances of success are too low for this to be a practical method. Quote from the author: 'Everyone who said they got a key is probably lying or mistaken!'"
