Comment It's not all bad (Score 1) 222

Our house was up over 27% in one month (zillow seems to fluctuate so now its up only about 19%), so t's not all bad. At some point it will be time to cash out and move on to somewhere cheaper. (we did the same in silicon valley.) The city has definitely changed in the last 20 years, but the state legislature tries to keep the crazy liberal ideas somewhat in check. It really is a nice city, but the recent tolerance for homeless people camping by the roading and shitting in public is definitely wearing thin.

The store in Austin has almost nothing aside from random phone cases, cheap perfume, etc. No computers, no monitors, no tv's, no appliances. They have been liquidating for a while, but just didn't tell anyone. It was pretty obvious, even though they kept saying they were switching vendors. it's really too bad, since they used to be a great place to buy computer parts.

Lots of people use propane or natural gas heat. A cheap generator is all you need to run the circulation on a central heater that is powered by gas. People should stock up on fuel for their generators, which is why I have a propane generator and a lot of bbq size tanks, which can easily be stored in the garage, or even outside.

Comment Re:The real problem is that it hits dispropotionat (Score 1) 384

There were plenty of generators available in stores if you wanted one prior to the outages. People need to stop whining and start looking out for themselves. We purchased an inexpensive propane generator years ago and keep a stock of 20-pound propane tanks in case of emergency, just like we keep a stockpile of food, water and other essential items. Anyone claiming that it was poor neighborhoods that lost power while the well-off neighborhoods did fine doesn't know what they are talking about. We lost power multiple times and ended up having to use our generator to keep the refrigerator and freezer running.

Comment "above the percentage expected" (Score 1) 384

The problem here is that the expected contribution from wind and solar was terrible, which is a lesson for anyone advocating 100% green power. BTW, power was out overnight as well and solar farms produced zero power after dark, so the 6x additional power produced by solar is a bit of a red herring... It's fine for a bit of extra power in the summer when AC use is high, but for other times it sucks. I think we still set a record for total consumption of natural gas (since large numbers of people use natural gas to heat their homes) at around 18 billion cubic feet. Anyone pushing for all-electric homes (California, NY, MA) should reconsider.

Comment It might be because of the electricity sources (Score 1) 384

If you look at the sources of the electricity in Canada it might point to another reason why there are fewer problems with electricity production. https://energyrates.ca/the-mai... Canada relies far less on wind power than Texas and has far more nuclear/coal/hydro.
