..seriously? Who fucking cares is their hardware is tied to their software or walled gardens or whatever. There are too many choices in this market to start branding Apple of all people as "evil". If you don't like it don't use it. I personally use a mix of Apple and other technologies but only what I want to use and what makes me productive and happy.

I was at the SIGGRAPH talk and it was really interesting to watch that chip function (obviously a bit slower than what it would natively). The speaker went through how they laid out all of the circuits based on the different chips they had stripped and photographed, and then he showed it in action. He started by filling and emptying single registers and then he started doing some ops on it. I wish I could provide some video of it in action, but I have a feeling SIGGRAPH wouldn't like that very much.

Valve Releases Updated Alien Swarm For Free With Code Base 164
baronvoncarson tips news that today Valve released an updated version of Alien Swarm, a popular Unreal Tournament 2004 total conversion mod. The creators of the mod were hired by Valve, and they've helped turn it into a stand-alone game running on the Source engine. Valve is also releasing the code base for Alien Swarm and an SDK. The game is available for free on Steam.

There are different certification processes, but if you use crappy middleware like Unreal Tech, you can put pretty much the same game out on PS3 and 360 with minor additional effort. A lot of major studios are eschewing PC titles and focusing only on console, as well.

Hugh Pickens writes: "Edmund Conway has an interesting article in the Telegraph where he analyzes where the money goes when you buy a complex electronic device marked "Made in China" and why a developed economy doesn't need a trade surplus in order to survive. For his example Conway chooses a 30GB video iPod "manufacturered" in China in 2006. Each iPod, sold in the US for $299, provides China with an export value of about $150, but as it turns out Chinese producers really only “earned” around $4 on each unit. "China, you see, is really just the place where most of the other components that go inside the iPod are shipped and assembled." Conway says that when you work out the overall US balance of payments, it shows that most of the cash for high tech inventions has flowed back to the United States as a direct result of the intellectual property companies own in their products. "While the iPod is manufactured offshore and has a global roster of suppliers, the greatest benefits from this innovation go to Apple, an American company, with predominantly American employees and stockholders who reap the benefits," writes Conway. "As long as the US market remains dynamic, with innovative firms and risk-taking entrepreneurs, global innovation should continue to create value for American investors and wellpaid jobs for knowledge workers.
