Sorry, no mod points left but +1 Insightful.

Even just getting public transport will keep a few pounds off, it might not turn you into an uber-athlete but the extra mile of walking and standing around waiting for the train/bus still helps (compared to driving to work).

Sorry, I thought you just wanted to recover the data. Personally I just whip out the old HDD (takes 5mins in most cases, probably a lot longer for a Mac though) and plug it into my laptop (which boots in like 1min) via a USB adapter. From where I can run all sorts of recovery tools as fast as the HDD can work and without dealing with a sluggish interface on the host machine.

Remember this one from January?

http://apple.slashdot.org/story/12/01/10/1619247/protecting-your-tablet-from-a-fall-from-space

The tablet was wrapped up in it's special case and it was dropped from 100,000ft (via a helium balloon). Also attached to it was a GoPro to film the whole thing. The GoPro was just in its own standard plastic case!

Here is a list of the official mounts:

However I know of several other (unofficial?) mounts such as kite-line mounts (for mounting the camera up in a kite or paraglider canopy), I've even seen 'follow cam' systems being used where the gopro is tethered to the back of paraglider canopy and 'flies' behind you:

Admittedly the above product can work with many different products, not just GoPro.

Another reason for the success of the GoPro would be the way they teamed up with RedBull to make head cam footage for snowboarding, mountain biking, BASE jumping etc videos:

Although the GoPro might not be the BEST camara out there for the price it certainly works well enough for a LOT of people who want something tough and reliable with good HD video without spending >€500

I have no affiliation with GoPro or any of the other companies mentioned here.

In my Windows days I always made good use of the Quick Launch toolbar for that exact reason. Clicking the 'Reveal Desktop' button then choosing which app to launch was always a bit slower than expanding the quick launch then clicking an app (although it was the same number of clicks). These days I'm on Gnome2 (still haven't left Lucid Lynx quite) and the top panel achieves this without the extra click because separating windows and widgets/launchers into two panels means plenty of free space so you don't need to expand the 'quick launch', you just have a long row of icons (12 icons currently although there is space for another 10 if need be). However I still find it useful to have mounted drives listed on the desktop because I often have quite a lot of them and wouldn't want them to clutter the dock/panel/taskbar etc.

Sorry, maybe I misunderstood but you said:

By your reasoning, Switzerland should be a madhouse of old-west style gunfights; I'll leave it to you to discover whether or not that is the case.

And my point was that relatively speaking, compared to it's neighbours with lower levels of gun ownership, Switzerland has very high levels of gun related deaths.
