I suppose you are referring to a much-cited quote attributed to Socrates about the behavior of contemporary youths. Although people back in the day of Socrates most surely were complaining about how their kids were turning up, this quote has been shown to be falsely attributed to Socrates. In fact, Socrates himself was accused of corrupting the youth, having taught the very controversial figure of Alcibiades, and famously found himself in the crosshairs of Aristophanes in his comedy "The clouds" in which the son of the protagonist gives his father (the protagonist) a good wallop after being taught by Socrates how to reason in favor of such behavior.

Back to the topic, but also in continuation of what I wrote before, Our civilization, in my opinion, it is progressing technologically *only*. Societal progress is then driven by technology. If technology was to remain stagnant, so would society.

My Tesla does automatic OTA updates while it sits in my garage.

Call me old-fashioned, but how does that make you feel? Honest question. I want my car predictable, not waking up in the morning and discovering that something was changed into something I paid for and I'm supposed to own without my approval while I was sleeping. Even if it's for the better, I will still have to adjust to it, and this is not something that I look forward to when I want to drive to work in the morning.

I believe that at some point in the (near?) future people will refer to something written/created as "pre-AI" or "post-AI". If there ever was a good time to become a used book collector, I think now is the best time. Anything from the post-AI era will have to be cross-checked for hallucinations based on something from the pre-AI era.

Yeah, but it took somewhere between 18 and ca. 28 years to train them, depending on specialization. Going with the average (23) and 2500 kcal per day (kids don't need that much, let's keep it simple), that's about 88 GJ. If you want that brain trained within a week, that's 145 kW... Huh, you're right, I guess his algorithms suck indeed.

A supercar might cost the same as 20 Honda Civics, but skipping building the supercar wouldn't free up resources up to the task of building 20 Honda Civics.

I'm not much of a economist, but I am an engineer. A supercar requires specialized materials, much more detailed and innovative design, tighter tolerances in order to be able to perform so much better than the Civic. I wouldn't know if the break-even point in terms of resources is 20 Civics, but it is definitely more than 1:1

But I can provide another argument for you: building a supercar pushes the technological limits. New materials and technology in general is invented that in 10-20 years time will also be found in the Civic. So, even nobody really needs a supercar, we should continue letting the rich subsidize the technology development for the Civic drivers.

Who said that storing the CO2 in the old oil reservoir is going to be for free? Do you think oil companies will do it for charity? There will be plenty of money involved to pay for the monitoring as long as the business is ongoing. The problem you mention will come long after the reservoir is full and sealed and all the monitoring equipment broken down.
