Microsoft Surface To Coordinate SuperBowl Security 218

suraj.sun writes to tell us that in preparation for nearly a quarter of a million people descending on Tampa for the Super Bowl, the Tampa authorities are deploying new tech for security communications and response. All of the incidents and communications will be plotted and tracked on a new implementation of Microsoft's Surface. Hopefully it wont have to reboot after every new incident report. "The Microsoft Surface device will display a Microsoft Virtual Earth map of the entire region tracking events, incidents, resources and tasks in real-time using its unique large display, multi-user, multi-touch and interactive capabilities, also allowing it to communicate with remote devices and PCs. With a quick hand-gesture, the map can zoom in and display a 3D image of the city, including detailed views of buildings and streets and real time resource tracking."

Cannot agree more. Many times I can hardly bring myself to read the comments because I can always expect the socially retarded slashdotters to trot out page after page of the Same Damn Shit. In soviet russia..., anything about Microsoft brings talk of Ballmer throwing chairs, etc. At least get with the times, and learn some new memes. If you don't understand comedy, just stay home. Please.

snydeq writes "Windows XP, Windows Vista, and (soon) Windows 7 all support SMP out of the box, but as InfoWorld's Randall Kennedy notes, 'experience has shown that multiprocessing across discrete CPUs is not the same thing as multiprocessing across integrated cores within the same CPU.' As such, Kennedy set out to stress the multiprocessing capabilities of Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7 in dual-core and quad-core performance tests. The comprehensive, multiprocess workload tests were undertaken to document scalability, execution efficiency, and raw performance of workloads. 'What I found may surprise you,' Kennedy writes. 'Not only does Microsoft have a firm grasp of multicore tuning, but its scalability story promises to keep getting better with time. In other words, Windows Vista and Windows 7 are poised to reap ever greater performance benefits as Intel and AMD extend the number of cores in future editions of their processors.'"

SubtleGuest writes: The National Energy Administration has approved a plan allowing China Datang Corp, the nation's second biggest power producer, to construct a $659 million wind farm facility that will generate 400 megawatts. At $0.10/kWh, it will pay for itself in about two years. $659,000,000 to generate 400,000,000 watts of power, or 400,000 kW. That's a constant income of $40,000 at $0.10 per kWh. Divide $659 million by $40K and it's 16,475 hours. Divide that by 24 and it's 686 days. Divide that by 365.25 and it's 1.9 years.
