Comment As technology shrinks so does our space (Score 1) 484

Once technology catches up they'll be able to sit us single file. Think about it, the computer is almost gone from the desktop and and the monitor is a fraction of it's former volume. Once we all have digital glasses on our eyes and no noise from the out side earphones on our ears it could very *feel* that we are working alone on top of Mount Everest, the beach, Mars, wherever. But then do we really even need to be in the office? Some managers will still think so and we'll all be sitting in a stripped down warehouse in orderly rows and columns.

Woman Creates 3-D Erotic Book For the Blind 113

Lisa J. Murphy has written an erotic book with tactile images for that special visually impaired porn connoisseur in your life. Tactile Mind contains explicit softcore raised images, along with Braille text and photos. From the article: "A photographer with a certificate in Tactile Graphics from the Canadian National Institute for the Blind, Murphy learned to create touchable images of animals for books for visually impaired children. Then she realized that there was a lack of such books for adults only. 'There are no books of tactile pictures of nudes for adults, at least the last time I looked around,' says Murphy. 'We're breaking new ground. Playboy has [an edition with] Braille wording, but there are no pictures.' She says that while we live in a culture saturated with sexual images, the blind have been 'left out.'"

An Animal That Lives Without Oxygen 166

Julie188 writes "Scientists have found the first multicellular animals that apparently live entirely without oxygen. The creatures reside deep in one of the harshest environments on earth: the Mediterranean Ocean's L'Atalante basin, which contains salt brine so dense that it doesn't mix with the oxygen-containing waters above."

Sure, individuals need to practice self control but there was an interesting feature article in the May-June 2006 issue of American Scientist, "The Allure of Fast-Paced Pictures", which was really more about interesting pictures and the brains natural tendency to focus on them. Blame your opioid receptors. A conclusion from this study would be that the people behind you are simply hard-wired to look at - at least for some period of time - your interesting, colorful, perhaps moving pictures instead of paying attention to the professor. It's hard to look away from the thing darting across the field, a TV or your neighbor's facebook page.

Comment Ban teaching by powerpoint before you ban laptops (Score 3, Insightful) 664

I've been out of academia since '95 but back then professors wrote on the board (with the occasional overhead graph) and students wrote on paper. My girlfriend recently went back to school and almost every class is taught by powerpoint presentation which nearly begs the students to bring in their laptops. If you want to ban the laptop then ban the lazy practice of teaching by powerpoint.

8-Year Fan-Made Game Project Shut Down By Activision 265

An anonymous reader writes "Activision, after acquiring Vivendi, became the new copyright holder of the classic King's Quest series of adventure game. They have now issued a cease and desist order to a team which has worked for eight years on a fan-made project initially dubbed a sequel to the last official installment, King's Quest 8. This stands against the fact that Vivendi granted a non-commercial license to the team, subject to Vivendi's approval of the game after submission. After the acquisition, key team members had indicated on the game's forums (now stripped of their original content by order of Activision) that Activision had given the indication that it intended to keep its current fan-game licenses, but was not interested in issuing new ones."
