I was in high school, studying at a friend's house for our biology midterm, when her sister came running down the stairs shouting "The Challenger just went up." And my friend said "Yes, the Challenger is going up today." And the sister said "No, no, it blew up."
A couple of years later, I was in college taking Freshman Physics 102. The professor was supposed to be running an experiment on the (grounded) Space Shuttle. Instead, he was teaching Freshman Physics 102. And he never let us forget that. I think the mean on the first test was around 30% before somebody got a higher-up to step in.
Do your paper notebooks support searching for keywords inside the articles?
+1 to org-mode. I'm still getting used to it (not an emacs fan) but it has nice note-taking qualities (I like my notes in a bulletted outline), some basic calendaring for logs and scheduled events, and other cool features that I haven't even begun to explore.
I love and trust my wife. She has the keys to my house, she has the keys to my car, she has the joint credit cards, she has the joint checking account, she has the joint savings account.
But my passwords? To quote Weird Al, I'm just not ready for that kind of a commitment.
The article says "around 30 per cent of the mail in his spam box turned out not to be spam", and you call that "the world's best spam filter"?
Somebody should tell Linus about this great new operating system I run at home. I have sendmail running on my machine, and it lets me control my spam filters and everything.
It's called "Linux". I highly recommend it.
Oh, you wanted brakes, too? I don't see anything on the invoice about brakes.
It's a voluntary contract. When you buy the home, you understand that the home has an HOA and you agree to follow its rules and regulations.
>Why is some local county councilman being stupid news?
Not sure if you're being rhetorical, but there's an answer.
In Maryland, the county is the primary local government. There is one "independent city" (Baltimore), and a small number of "incorporated cities" that have a limited amount of "home rule", primarily zoning.
States like New York and New Jersey, you have the State, the County, the Town, and the Village, all providing different levels of services and different levels of government.
In Maryland, you have the State and the County.
My employer keeps the time in a specific format: YYYY-DDD-HH-MM-SS UTC
I would really like an app that would
1. Display the current time in both YYYY-DDD-HH-MM-SS UTC and YYYY-MM-DD-HH-MM-SS local time (which for me is EST/EDT but nice to be configurable, since I have machines also in MST/MDT)
2. Allow me to enter a time, in either format, and convert it to the other.
I wrote a GTK program for my Linux machine, that I can't get working on my Windoze machines. But having it on the iPhone/iPad would be great.
I'll bet the NSA uses Linux, too. Isn't that the hacking OS that uses text on a black screen?
And FTP, that's how the hackers move their files around. I'll bet NSA uses that too.
Your robotic, do-everything catbox would've cost substantially more if the company were not figuring on a continuing revenue stream. In fact, it might have cost so much that nobody would've bought it.
It is not my job to provide you with a "continuing revenue stream". It is your job to convince me that your product is worthy of receiving my money.
We don't want you to close. We just want you to pay us.
I enjoyed NetHack a lot in college during the 3.low-numbered-X days. It slowly increased its complexity to the point where it stopped being fun for me. It started becoming more about the meta-game -- how to test your gems, how to mix your potions, how to identify your scrolls -- and less about the dungeons. I gave up on it when they added the Sokoban levels and I switched to Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup, although I'm playing that less and less these days as well in favor of Larn. At least Larn has a clearly defined goal and a clear path to get there.
I will fully acknowledge that it's the standard and the baseline. It's just not fun for me anymore.
