The only reason I have purchased any of the CDs I own is because of downloading them before buying to hear the entire album, to find out if it is worth buying. I have hundreds of CDs because the artists made good albums, albums worth paying for because every track was good. I would not have bought a single album if it wasn't for being able to download the tracks in FLAC before buying.

The old way to define a kilobyte was introduced to make life easier for programmers, but nowadays the size of storage is going up in GB and TB and maybe to PB very soon. And most people using computers are not geeks, they are normal people which understand kilo, mega, giga etc. in the SI way. And why should computer technicians use the prefixes differently than any other science? Just because RAM is packed in base-2 units? That makes no sense. In 10 years nobody will care any longer about kibi.

Energy Star is based on 400 loads a year.

Gamers Pay To Play With Girls 408

taucross writes "A new site allows lonely Xbox 360 gamers to pay a prescribed fee for a few minutes of game time with one of the 'PlayDates', a girl who is paid to play video games. EA To Charge For Game Demos 313

Kohato brings word of a new Electronic Arts marketing strategy that aims to start monetizing game demos. According to industry analyst Michael Patcher after an EA investor visit, the publisher will start selling "premium downloadable content" prior to a game's release for $10-$15 that is essentially a longer-than-usual demo. Patcher said, "I think that the plan is to release PDLC at $15 that has 3-4 hours of gameplay, so [it has] a very high perceived value, then [EA will] take the feedback from the community (press and players) to tweak the follow-on full game that will be released at a normal packaged price point." He also made reference to a comment from EA's CEO John Riccitiello that "the line between packaged product sales and digital revenues would soon begin to blur."

Submission + - Lie-in for teenagers sees drop in absenteeism (bbc.co.uk) 1

krou writes: Monkseaton High School in North Tyneside, UK, began an experiment in October that saw its 800 pupils ranging in age from 13-19 attend school an hour later than normal at 10am. Early results indicate that 'general absence has dropped by 8% and persistent absenteeism by 27%'. Head teacher Paul Kelley supported the idea because he believed that 'it was now medically established that it was better for teenagers to start their school day later in terms of their mental and physical health and how they learn better in the afternoon', and he now claims that the children are becoming 'happier better educated teenagers' as a result of the experiment. The experiment is being overseen by Oxford neuroscience professor Russell Foster. 'He performed memory tests on pupils at the school which suggested the more difficult lessons should take place in the afternoon. He said young people's body clocks may shift as they reach their teenage years — meaning they want to get up later not because they are lazy but because they are biologically programmed to do.'

The expansion has the DRM, but the base game had it patched over a few months ago. (try not to buy it from steam though, there have been issues with there not being a patch)

Its a great, beautifully crafted game, if you feel like trying it. Alternatively, theres anno 1701, or even anno 1503. 1503 is a great older game, less dumbed down than the later versions (sadly, 1404 is somewhat dumbed down, not enough to annoy me, but enough for me to notice) you could probably pick it up cheaply. If you like production chains, this should tick aaaallll your boxes.

Alternative titles for US people: anno 1404 is Dawn of Discovery, and the others are all A.D instead of anno.

Same here, Ubisoft has lost me as a customer over their DRM, and given the sales stats, they did not sell more probably they sold less due to AC2 having a DRM which is too aggressive. By now it normally would be on top of the charts worldwide. Well in Germany enough lemmings made it into the top five but thats it and in the US it does not even show up in the top 10 and last time I checked steam, it also was not on the top but around 5 or so.

Quite miserable for a AAA title which got its fair amount of hype upfront and has been awaited for months! I think Ubisoft could probably have sold twice as many copies by using a classical drm scheme instead of using their customers anals for nuturing their greed.

Well, every time that happens the game will pause. If it's disconnected for too long, it will quit and you lose your progress. You don't get the option to save.

"Well, they do say to save early, save often!"

I think you should have emphasized the fact that Ubisoft could have decided to build the game in such a way that he wouldn't _ever_ lose his save games just for disconnecting from the net, but they didn't because by inconveniencing him, they believe they can get more money out of people. Emphasize that Ubisoft has a choice, and they choose against your interests for their own greedy motives.

I think that might work well. People don't like being taken advantage of, or being under the power of someone else. It's just that they don't always know they are.
