God forbid that someone gets off a freeway and discovers a local establishment while passing through.

Having owned a business along such a commuter route... All I can say is ROTFLMAO. You have no idea what you're talking about.

All those commuters care about is getting the hell out of Dodge and back onto the freeway and getting home. They're not even looking at the local businesses.

I discovered and patronized two businesses based on routing my commute to avoid highways.

Be gone, ignorant one.

If those programs actually eliminated poverty, then they could be greatly reduced. While they help keep people maintain themselves, they don't address a lot of the underlying conditions, so poverty is not truly reduced.

If that wasn't the quackery part, then what do they do that you call quackery?

A belief that every disease is caused by spinal misalignment, I would consider quackery. Stretching of muscles and spinal adjustments when someone is presenting with back pain I would not consider quackery.

As an example, I was digging up sod and carrying it around my yard a couple years ago to make a garden, and strained something in my back. After a few days of pain, I went to a doctor (MD), who took x-rays, and recommended resting and seeing a chiropractor. I visited a chiropractor, who did some back cracking and recommended some stretches, nothing weird. After a couple days of this I was doing much better.

Comment Re:Sonic Boom (Score 1) 202

A sonic boom is a shock wave. When an object is going faster than the speed of sound, you aren't going to hear it until the shockwave reaches you. If it temporarily goes supersonic, it will produce a shock wave that continues on without it, which will weaken over time. If it continues flying at the speed of sound, it will travel with the shock wave, maintaining its strength. If it continues going faster than the speed of sound, it will leave a trailing shock wave.

You can visualize it like the bow wave from a boat. The faster the boat goes, the more the wave become conical behind it. When that wave hits, that's the sonic boom. It's the increase in pressure caused by the shock wave that creates the "boom". Depending on the shock strength, it may not be very strong.

A "shock wave" can be of any strength. It's just an instantaneous change (in pressure, temperature, etc.).

Comment Re:Sonic Boom (Score 1) 202

A sonic boom is the propagation of a shock wave through the air. The shock wave is generated when an object exceeds the speed of sound, whether by a little or a lot. It does of course attenuate with distance (and height), but they still are created and can be heard. Maybe you're saying that by the time it goes that far it's weaker, which I agree with, but it's still technically a sonic boom.

How about some facts from NASA? https://www.nasa.gov/centers/a...

...A sonic boom is the thunder-like noise a person on the ground hears when an aircraft or other type of aerospace vehicle flies overhead faster than the speed of sound or supersonic...

...An aircraft, for example, flying supersonic at 50,000 feet can produce a sonic boom cone about 50 miles wide...

...increasing speeds above Mach 1.3 results in only small changes in shock wave strength...

You are lucky. Far too many states that shouldn't have been swing states suddenly became so. I live in Minnesota, which was supposed to be a part of the "blue wall", and has the dubious honor of being the only state in the union to vote democrat in the 1984 election, still hasn't been called. I have family in Wisconsin and Michigan, also supposedly part of the blue wall, both of which unexpectedly swung for Trump. In all 3 of those states, the vote counts for Johnson alone are greater than the difference between Trump and Clinton, so peoples' choice to vote 3rd party definitely had an effect on the outcome.

You're assuming they would have voted for Clinton, and not for Trump.
