You fail to mention that you have to be good. With the ability to play good music, it becomes rather likely that someone who hears you play will go and show his friend some video of you playing and be like "Hey, look at this guy! He's really good!" It's called "word of mouth" and it's far more trustworthy than anything a record label could produce.

I'm not sure you have any idea what you're talking about.

You're comparing something that's highly rich in features, like Firefox, to an extremely bloated frontend. If it uses 75 megs of RAM to run something extremely simple, what do you think would happen with something just as complex as Firefox? Does extrapolation mean nothing to you?

Submission + - The Speed Gamers raise over $18 000 for Autism 1

Levonn Lawrence writes: "Moving in to day 4 of 7, TSG (The Speed Gamers) continue to play a Final Fantasy marathon for an unusual reason. The reason being... Charity. The guys at TSG are playing through every main Final Fantasy game from one to twelve, over a period of 7 days in hopes or raising $20 000 for ACT Today (Autism Care and Treatment). ACT is a charity helping to financially support families effected by Autism. The marathon started 6pm CST, Friday, July 17th, 2009 and is going until Friday, July 24th 2009. So far they've raised over $18 000 (not a typo) and they're only 70 hours in. Stop by and donate, message, and give them all the support you can. http://www.thespeedgamers.com/"

...who guarantees that a person who looks at drawn image of underage girls today won't look for photos tomorrow?

And why should we just assume that they will?

That same sort of slippery-slope argument could be used to ban any number of things. Who guarantees that someone buying a hammer isn't going to use it to murder their neighbor tomorrow? Who guarantees that someone buying a condom isn't going to go out and rape some woman tomorrow?

Why should an act which victimizes no one be banned because the person just might do something more sinister tomorrow?

Submission + - Ubuntu Wipes Windows 7 in Benchmarks. (tuxradar.com)

twitter writes: "Recent and controversial benchmarks for Windows 7 leave an important question unanswered, "Is it faster than GNU/Linux?" Here, at last, is a benchmark that pits Ubuntu, Vista and Windows 7 against each other on the same modern hardware. From install time to GUI efficiency, Ubuntu beats Windows and is often twice as fast. Where Windows 7 is competitive, the difference is something the average user would not notice. The average GNU/Linux user is now getting better absolute performance from their computer as well as better value than the average Windows user."

If you get screwed over by DRM and have the ability to unscrew yourself over (via cracking the game yourself), is that unethical?

Is it any more unethical to have someone else crack the game for you in order to do the same thing (this is assuming you own a protected copy of the game)?
