Having worked for a local council as an IT Engineer I can state that I had the ability to re-set everyone's log on passwords including people who worked with child services, If Someone left the machine locked but with the db open I could have easily accessed it. The real problem with that was none of the Local council IT staff was required to have a crb check because they weren't working directly with children.

Maybe it's just an English thing but our schools activly encourage students to go out and learn about diverse viewpoints. We teach sex education so surely students who want to read more into certain issues should be able to access website like the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation and the Human Rights Campaign. If you don't want your children to be exposed to Gays, lesbians ect then keep them out of the public school system because sure as hell in a year of 200 students and a school of over 1000 some will be gay.

TinBromide writes "The developers over at Jolt Online Gaming have released Legends of Zork to the general public. It's a free, browser-based, adventure game based on the world of Zork. You play as a Traveling Salesman, recently laid off from FrobozzCo. You start off in a clearing, where a white house has a boarded up door. From there, you can do what you like. Explore the world, fight other salesmen in PVP, or try out your Darkvision Goggles in the dark — just try not to get eaten by a grue." It's free in that you're given 30 Action Points each day, which are consumed by moving about and fighting. Their business model is that if you want more Action Points, you can purchase more.

Taming Conficker, the Easy Way 288

Dan Kaminsky writes "We may not know what the Conficker authors have in store for us on April 1st, but I doubt many network administrators want to find out. Maybe they don't have to: I've been working with the Honeynet Project'sTillmann Werner and Felix Leder, who have been digging into Conficker's profile on the network. What we've found is pretty cool: Conficker actually changes what Windows looks like on the network, and this change can be detected remotely, anonymously, and very, very quickly. You can literally ask a server if it's infected with Conficker, and it will give you an honest answer. Tillmann and Felix have their own proof of concept scanner, and with the help of Securosis' Rich Mogull and the multivendor Conficker Working Group, enterprise-class scanners should already be out from Tenable (Nessus), McAfee/Foundstone, nmap, ncircle, and Qualys. We figured this out on Friday, and got code put together for Monday. It's been one heck of a weekend."

Recently Peter Hansteen found himself resorting to active greytrapping to put some spammers in their place. The article also contains a list of spam houses' snail mail addresses in case you want to tour their sites."
