Comment Re:so Scotland is not part of the UK now with this (Score 4, Interesting) 185

It's very difficult to find out whether Scotland costs the UK or the UK subsidises it. The headline trade figures show that it is subsidised, but as the Scots point out a lot of that is because many of the companies who's production is in Scotland have head offices in London, so it looks on paper that their profits are made in England. Looking at things like the lower unemployment rate in Scotland, the energy sector, military ports, etc - offset by greater social benefits (free prescriptions, government pays for social care etc.) I suspect that it works out roughly even - neither paying nor costing the rest of the UK anything significant.

I agree that kerbside recycling of plastic is problematic. I would never say it can never be made to work, but we would either need some new process to break all plastics down to common components or some highly automated sensor/sorter.

However there are some cases where you can get a large amount of one place plastic in one. The office I worked in had a receptacle near the coffee machine specifically for the coffee cups the vending machine used. Recycling large items like car dashboards could be made to work by giving breakers sufficient incentives. Manufacturers that have components or raw materials delivered in large containers often already swap on delivery for reuse or recycling. There are a number of easy wins.

They all keep talking about scale and being cheaper than current beef in the US. They should be instead targeting the ultra high end and worry about scale later.

An interesting idea - sort of what Tesla did for electric cars. Maybe this is the way to get wider acceptance, if people see it sold in top end restaurants, etc as consistent, gristle-free high quality food they will be more likely to try it when prices come down and volume goes up.
