Comment Re: No one would listen to AM in an emergency (Score 1) 262

Mobile phones are limited by their frequency range. There are no mobiles phones that work in the lower bands (50Mhz to 85Mhz) that has the longest range, but limited bandwidth. The range would be good, but that would only offer options like calling or sending a text message. Nothing else. Since internet speed would be limited to 500Kbps to 900Kbps at most.

Landlines are on backup power when the power goes out. That only lasts so long. Same for radio transmitters of any type and hand held radios and so on. Your devices are only as good your backup power plan. This mostly applies if you are dealing with a long term power outage.

That's also why you should buy a solar cell power and battery or two so that you can power your home in case of long term power outage. If that's an option you can afford.

Doctors deemed Kurtaj unfit to stand trial due to his severe autism so the jury was asked to determine whether or not he committed the alleged acts - not if he did so with criminal intent.

A mental health assessment used as part of the sentencing hearing said he "continued to express the intent to return to cyber-crime as soon as possible. He is highly motivated."

The jury was told that while he was on bail for hacking Nvidia and BT/EE and in police protection at a Travelodge hotel, he continued hacking and carried out his most infamous hack. [...]"

A second member in the UK was also sentenced in the same trial. But got a different sentence, because he was not compeletly insane like the other one (the 18 year old one).

"[...]Another Lapsus$ member, who is 17 and cannot be named because of his age, was found guilty in the same trial, which lasted six weeks at Southwark Crown Court.

He worked with Kurtaj and other members of Lapsus$ to hack tech giant Nvidia and phone company BT/EE and steal data before demanding a four million dollar ransom, which was not paid.

They also stole directly from individuals through their cryptocurrency wallets.

The 17-year-old was sentenced to an 18 month long Youth Rehabilitation Order, including intense supervision and a ban on using VPNs online.

As well as hacking offences the boy was sentenced for what the judge described as "unpleasant and frightening pattern of stalking and harassment" of two young women.
Kurtaj and the 17-year-old are the first members of the Lapsus$ group to be convicted but it is thought others are still at large. [...]"

There are around 5 billion users that use some type of social media. This takes time to end.

In 2005 there where around 1 billion people online. It took 18 years to add 4,3 billion people online. It is going to take at least that long, if not double that time for people to stop using the internet (as long there is not a major global disaster or war that might change this path).

This is going to take more than 10 years to happen, long as 20 years. It is going to happen, just as television stations (and streaming interestingly) is also slowly dying.

I don't read much of the Verge. But the current internet bubble has been running on free money. That is not a surprise that many social media are now starting to offer paid service with extra features. This is slowly happening all over. The reason is that the period of 0% interest rate money is over, that time period started after the economic crash of 2008 and that started this social media internet that we have today. Social media had existed before 2008, but cheap money allowed them to grow as was the case with many other internet based company and continue to run without having to return profit (many did go bankrupt or where acquired since 2008 as is the normal). When the free money ended when the interest rate started to go up, the need for profit returned or go bankrupt (or both as is going to be the case with many of this social media companies).

Currently the advertisement revenue is going down. Mostly because of a looming economic downturn because of businessmen poor decision making and really, really bad housing market (again) with a major debt problem and other credit bubbles that are going to crash soon.
