Comment Funny, I heard the same thing about their cameras (Score 4, Interesting) 252

I heard on the radio the other day that hotel and city surveillance cameras were going to be the key to prove his innocence or guilt since they are virtually EVERYWHERE in New York City.
The other interesting tidbit of information is that DSK said that he would be set-up in some sort of entrapment sex scandal a few weeks before he arrived in the USA.

I understand his concern, especially after Kaspersky son's kidnapping, but this would erode online privacy to say the least.

'described himself as an “optimistic paranoid” when it came to online security'
I guess an optimistic paranoid is hoping that the next security technology is better than the one before, but never really trusting anything or anyone.

Submission + - Netflix is the largest driver of peak net traffic (sandvine.com)

digitaldc writes: Netflix is the largest driver of peak period traffic on North America’s fixed access networks, accounting for almost a quarter of total bytes and nearly 30% of downloads.

With the rapid success of Netflix in (the US and) Canada, Internet providers worldwide, regardless of access technology and degree of mobility, must plan for a future in which on-demand video (whether provided by Netflix or another service) is a large proportion, if not the majority of, last-mile traffic.

Submission + - Boy (not Luke) demonstrates his new bionic hand (bbc.co.uk)

digitaldc writes: Last year, Patrick, a 24-year-old Austrian, decided to have his dysfunctional hand amputated and replaced with a bionic hand. He lost the use of his left hand after being electrocuted at work.

Here he demonstrates the extra movement his new bionic hand has given him, opening a bottle and tying his shoelaces, and tests a prototype hand which will give him additional wrist movement.

Submission + - Microsoft Making Multiple Versions of Win8 (bloomberg.com)

ShadowFoxx writes: Microsoft Corp. (MSFT) will make multiple versions of its next Windows operating system, with four that work on ARM Holdings Plc (ARM) technology, according to an Intel Corp. (INTC) executive.

The version designed for Intel chips will run older Windows programs, Renee James, head of Intel’s software business, said today in a presentation at the company’s Santa Clara, California, headquarters. The ARM versions won’t run older programs, she said. They will be tailored to mobile devices and tablet computers and there will also be a version for Intel chips to address that market.

Robotics

Submission + - Lingodroid Robots Invent Their Own Spoken Language (cnet.com)

digitaldc writes: When robots talk to each other, they're not generally using language as we think of it, with words to communicate both concrete and abstract concepts. Now Australian researchers are teaching a pair of robots to communicate linguistically like humans by inventing new spoken words, a lexicon that the roboticists can teach to other robots to generate an entirely new language.
