Comment Re:The real news (Score 1) 352

I don't speak for CPP obviously, but would presume you are not aware:
#1) Dust514 is not exactly new news, EvE players have known about it for about a year. The actual EvE client is being updated to allow the PC to gaming console interaction but that takes time.

#2) Is it easy to port a game written for one gaming platform to another? PS3 was selected at the time because it was the most popular out there and now a couple of years later, it isn't. Do you throw away all that work to code for Xbox or any other game console? I recall when even Xbox was having serious problems so no one is immune.

#3) Isn't a PS4 coming out or is that another vaporware product?

Twenty years ago, hackers were caught, prosecuted, and tossed in a hole for a long 'time out' - What has changed?

Comment EvE Online Attacked (Score 1) 1

After all the money CCP and those who play EvE Online has donated to worldwide events to help humans in need, this sort of attack is simply stupid.

I have not heard of LulzSec attacking WoW or any other PC gaming services, so why EvE? Just because of the Sony or PS3 game tie-in? That is not really news since us EvE players have known about it for almost a year. Dust514 will change the way people game as it will let two types of gaming merge into a single universe, which ought to be very enjoyable for everyone once it is in place.

Submission + - EVE Online targeted by LulzSec (eve-news.com) 1

lordsilence writes: "It seems LulzSec is now targeting CCP Games Hf with a denial of service attack. The extent of this attack is yet not known but the game cluster and EVEOnline.com website are down at the writing of this post..

A possible reason for targeting CCP could be the affiliation with Sony. CCP recently announced during E3 that their upcoming game Dust514 would be Sony Playstation 3 exclusive."

Comment Oregon's e-Cycles Program (Score 1) 249

Interesting article but at least there is one state doing something about e-waste. Oregon E-Cycles is a new statewide program that began January 1, 2009. It provides free recycling of computers, monitors, and TVs. The program is financed by electronics manufacturers and jointly implemented with the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality, who maintains a list of manufacturers' brands and compliance status. Oregon retailers may only sell those brands that are listed as pending or compliant. For more information about the program, go here: http://www.oregonecycles.org/

Comment Re:Tigerdirect - avoid (Score 1) 520

I also agree with avoiding Tigerdirect.

Some years ago, a customer placed an order for 100 computers, which was wonderful, except we were short 25 cases. [My company has been an OEM since 1996.] These are just medium tower cases, no power supplies, as we use specific components - We are also on a customer-imposed deadline. None of our distributors had any more in the same style case, which meant I had to go to the retail sites. I bought all I could find and ended up contacting Tigerdirect OEM sales department for the final 13 cases.

The order was confirmed, paid with a wire transfer, and confirmed (by email) that the order would get to us shortly. One week later, no cases - Contacted the Tigerdirect rep, "we are sorry, he is on vacation." (Where is my order?) "We have not received payment for that order." (I have here a faxed copy of the confirmation that payment was received by your bank ten minutes after the rep confirmed the order.) "Please fax us that confirmation." (I did.) "Please hold. ... There was a hold placed on your order for non payment." (HUH?!) "The finance department put a hold on it." (Why?) "I am bringing the finance dept. on the line now." At this point, I was starting to wonder who these people were. It took most of the day to get the issue corrected. The next morning, the rep came back from 'vacation' and called me to say they were out of stock on the order! grrrr

Meanwhile, five days remained to get the cases and the computers built, so went shopping to local computer stores and found them. The customer got everything on time a couple days later and that was the end of that deal.

Same morning that the customer accepted delivery, I get an email from Tigerdirect - they shipped the cases, UPS ground, so I called the rep. (Got an email that says the cases were shipped UPS ground this morning.) "Yes, isn't it wonderful." (I paid for overnight air.) "Oh. I can issue you a credit for your next order." (There will not be a next order. I want a full shipping refund because Tigerdirect not only put a hold on a wire transfer, they forgot to notify me that they had not shipped the order as indicated, and then shipped it via the wrong method. Now I've been put through hoops just to get this order here.) "I am sorry. I will pass your concerns along but I can not do anything."

I eventually filed a complaint with the BBB and had it resolved that way. Moral of this story: OEM's do not let friends buy from Tigerdirect, ever.

Submission + - Petition to open OS/2 source, round/2 (os2world.com) 1

The_Wilschon writes: On September 25, 2005, OS2World.com sent a petition with 11,613 signatures to IBM, asking them to release some or all of the source code to OS/2. Oddly, given IBM's embrace of the Open Source movement, the letter was ignored. So, on November 19 of this year, OS2World.com sent a second letter. They have also opened up a second petition round in order to show even more support to IBM for their requests. In particular, the System Object Model (SOM), Workplace Shell (WPS), and OS/2 kernel could both spur new OS/2 development and provide some fresh ideas to the Free Software world.
