Submission + - How to get around ISP port blocks? 1

casualsax3 writes: I'm going to be moving soon, and my new apartment comes with Optimum Online. I have a share on a Windows server that I need to get to over the Internet occasionally, and I just found out that Optimum blocks port 445 across their entire network in New York City (and perhaps elsewhere?). I have two laptops that run Linux, and one always-on desktop that runs Windows. What's the best way to get around the block and get to the share in Linux and in Windows?

That actually sounds more like a power issue. The 8x AGP cards were notoriously sensitive to fluctuations in one of the rails (I want to say 5v, but it's been forever...) Newer PCIe cards are better, but if you're running cool and your computer reboots for no reason (particularly during games) I'd put money on a poor quality or faulty PSU.

The best of the best posts (the ones where someone drops a paragraph of science that just ends the argument, or blows you away) are still here at Slashdot, but the signal to noise ratio has been fading fast lately.

Overall I find Reddit's comments are better and certainly more entertaining than Slashdot these days. The first 20 posts top level posts here are always a mixture of Off Topic, Troll, or +5 Funnies that aren't actually funny.

I agree that it's not the BBCs responsibility to provide revenue to the ISP, however I don't think that was suggested. I had, perhaps wrongly, assumed that the BBC would be getting that money extra $10, and that they'd be getting it by adding an optional tax onto your broadband bill. I'm not sure why the BBC would be concerned with ISP revenues.

I'm not going to pay $10 more a month for what I already have just because someone wants more money. But... if the BBC made their content such high quality that my 10Mbps connection wasn't enough to stream from their site, then maybe I'd consider upgrading to a 20Mbps plan. Don't offer me what I already have and pretend it's suddenly worth more - offer me something better, and then maybe I'll buy it.

The ZSNES boards employ a neat trick: http://board.zsnes.com/phpBB2/profile.php?mode=register&agreed=true

It's got a field that says "I am a robot" checked off by default. A human should obviously see that and uncheck it. Those registrations that come in with it checked are blackholed. It's definitely cut down on the SPAM accounts since they enabled it.

Introducing the Slashdot Firehose 320

Logged in users have noticed for some time the request to drink from the Slashdot Firehose. Well now we're ready to start having everybody test it out. It's partially a collaborative news system, partially a redesigned & dynamic next-generation Slashdot index. It's got a lot of really cool features, and a lot of equally annoying new problems for us to find and fix for the next few weeks. I've attached a rough draft of the FAQ to the end of this article. A quick read of it will probably answer most questions from how it works, what all the color codes mean, to what we intend to do with it.
