Maybe because Kansas City is being installed as fast as they want and they figure they can have teams in different locations going at max safe speed for install without conflicts. It could also be due to what the cable/media companies are doing with Caps and Cable subscription requirements to access content on hulu which goes inverse to the point of hulu. How best to shake things up then to have multiple sites being implemented forcing companies to upgrade networks or risk a google takeover of all customers.

Thammoud,

For those of us who are currently looking would you care to share where these positions are posted?

The big issue I've noticed is that getting past HR is impossible because they are looking for key words to filter based on. You could literally replace them with a computer and get better results. The person filtering needs to understand that if you have one year in Java and 6 years with C++ and another 3 with C# that you are have significantly more value then the two or three years of java that they are looking for.

The Cable Industry's a La Carte Bait and Switch 447

jfruhlinger writes "For years, cable operators have insisted that a la carte pricing, in which users could chose the channels they want, would undermine the both their own business models and the existence of important but less-watched channels currently wrapped into bundles. That's why it was surprising to hear that major cable companies are privately working towards offering a la carte pricing. But when you look at the details, it seems more like a bait and switch: those lesser channels (which pay cable companies for their place on the dial) will still be bundled with the local stations cable companies are required to provide, whereas pricey sports channels (which cable companies have to pay for) will become HBO-like premium services."

I know a CEO like this. He had to have a Macbook Pro and a Macbook Air and now he wants all the sales people to have iPad's because nothing else is acceptable except the device with the most elit image even if it is significantly harder to manage and for the users to operate for there tasks.

I think you will end up seeing more tablets with the power of a pc. I'm talking units like Asus' eee slate 121. We are moving some of our sales reps to these as they provide a full computer while also allowing for more sleek presentations. Im personally waiting on the second gen as it will have an i5 v2 in it verses the current which is i5 v1

its a lot simpler and cheaper to continue on the pc platform then to throw out your existing code base, migrate all of your reports and provide training to your staff who are lucky as it is when they turn any electronic device on.

my company evaluated all of the tablet solutions and we realized to our dismay that a windows7 pro tablet allows better security control, easier document syncing, no extra cost compared to our existing system, does not require the user to have a second device just to install os updates, allows for remote support, doesnt require a user to register an account that we would then have to manage because you know they will forget the password and the device pin if your able to find a way to force the pin.

The only thing we found that the ipad had over say the asus is battery life and about .5lbs

Apple devices are great consumer devices. In fact I am using one right now to type this. Apple does not belong in corporate America. Nor do they really care about the market. They more then love the profit margins they have with consumers.

The issue mostly comes up however when attendance is mandatory. I had many classes that I didn't need to read the materiel or listen to the instructor to receive an A or B in however the institute had a strict policy that students must be dropped from the class if they miss more then 10% of classes.

In those classes i always made sure to sit in the back so as to not distract others.

Some instructors are just dreadful however and your stuck taking a class with them as its a requirement and they are the only one who teaches it. In these cases id find groups using what ever i was doing as a distraction.

The summery says they manage 1000 computers not that all the computers they manage need to be replaced. Most companies such as my own have a maximum age for PCs in there facility. We try to go with about a 4-5 year replacement cycle. If we followed this method strictly it would mean every year we would replace about 30-40 PC's. I would thus guess they only need to 200 or so PC's a year. at 1000 computers there IT staff should have at least 3 people who could squeeze in assembling machines during normal work hours as squeezing things in is what the job requires. It would just add about 33 hours work for assembling and with a proper lan imaging installer hardly any time for that portion.

The real catch here is that a $500-1000 PC from dell that normally includes the support contract at least for businesses tends to run close to the cost of building your own. Once you get into the 2k-4k range non servers you tend to see build it yourself machines being more cost effective.

Every time they pull things like this they show the truth that no government is any better then any other because people are all the same and will do what they want when in power no matter what rules exist.
