I bet they have a deal that there is a transmitter and direct fiber line to it IN Steve Jobs' office. More seriously, I would highly doubt that there aren't multiple att towers on apple's campus. When you are developing cell phones you can just cripple coverage with thousands of phones all doing automated testing on the same tower

When they get a search warrant, make a copy of your hard drive and find the movie still on there. There are some people that are smart and can cover their tracks, but when piracy is mainstream, even the idiots do it. That is the real problem, it is no longer hackers that steal movies, but the average joe.

Even if they can't prove it was you the media company will just lobby for a law that declares copyright infringement from an IP address is the responsibility of the person owning the ISP account then you will be screwed.

Dear Journalists,
There are lies, damn lies, statistics and now facebook group sizes. All are meaningless but facebook groups are exceedingly meaningless. Although facebook might be the latest internet craze please get off your ass and do some real journalism. Please never quote how many people are in a facebook group again. I really don't care how many idiots clicked a viral marketing button because they have nothing better to do then drool over facebook updates all day at their computer/phone. Then again, you are probably quoting facebook because you are one of these people. Please at least stop writing for mediums outside of facebook and make the world a better place.

Thanks,

Often these aren't a single very common typo or error. They are usually 10-100 unique aspects of the file that should be different. After looking at a hundred programs, two that are the same stand out like a sore thumb.

Justice is important, any accusation of cheating should be appeal-able if they are truly wrongly accused. Most people just admit it.

Fortunately the smart usually don't cheat or get away with it. Cheating well almost always if more work then the original. Even if not, I would still probably hire a smart cheater (who takes short cuts on unimportant things) rather then a knowledgeable idiot.

This would be flagged but wouldn't pass the manual review. As a former Graduate Teaching Assistant, cheaters are easy to spot because they are LAZY! They turn in the exact same files (same comments with same misspellings) with maybe a different name at the top. The only good way to cheat is to make sure every things is perfectly correct and has no identifying characteristics.

Comment Re:I get music for free online! (Score 1) 261

Yeah, buy you apparently play by the rules and only consume what is given away for free (or what you paid for). The problem is that most people see that some music is given away for free and then suddenly the demand that all their music is free. It isn't, but that doesn't stop them from pirating it. If you don't like the business model, don't consume their content, especially by pirating it. Choose to consume content that has a good business model, like the parent poster consuming free content. If you think the free stuff sucks, then pay for the good stuff.

Ok, square footage and power might be impressive to some. I really just want to know the number of fiber lines and bandwidth in these data centers. I figure if it is about 1 TB/s, I could consider renting space for an apartment there for the right price.

Amen to that. We have changed from laborer society to a creative society. You job pays you because you do creative work (intelligent adaptation of previous knowledge). If there isn't any way to protect creative work from being ripped off the value of creative work goes way down and you will be without a job. There is no incentive to invest up-front because someone else can steal and ruin your ability to make back money. I really get annoyed with people saying that business are not adapting to the new environment and technology. It is those people who can't adapt to the environment but must consume as much as possible without contributing anything back.

Random disconnects and abnormally slow speeds sounds like a bad or noisy line. You should get the phone line to your house replaced and that will likely solve the problem. I've used AT&T DSL for years without issues. It is slower then cable, but also quite a bit cheaper. Even as a techie, I for the longest time had a 768k line by choice. I couldn't justify $10-$30 extra a month to watch junk quality internet videos (especially with free HD OTA), and figured I could wait twice as long for my infrequent download (overnight is the same either way). The only disconnect I've ever had was actually with cable internet, the problem was that there is a 4 way splitter out in the open on a telephone pole that apparently someone walking by "kicked" my line out of.
