Submission + - Ardipithecus ramidus described (finally) (nytimes.com)

Omomyid writes: "I wasn't actually aware that Dr. Tim White of UC Berkeley had been 'sitting' on A. ramidus but apparently he has (I remember the original flurry of interest back in the 90's when it was announced), but now Dr. White and others have assembled a nearly complete skeleton of the 4.4mya specimen and the descriptions being carried by the NY Times and AP are intriguing. Ramidus is clearly differentiated from the other Great Apes and also more primitive than A. afarensis (Lucy) providing a nice linkage backwards to the last shared ancestor between humans and chimpanzees. According to the NY Times, a whole passel of papers will be published in tomorrow's Science magazine describing A. ramidus."

Comment Arbitrary code? (Score 0, Troll) 520

Why doesn't nintendo want arbitrary code to run on its console? Its not like it has an internet connection or anything....

Oh wait it does... Well, its not like that internet connection could be abused through running arbitrary code....

Oh no, absolutely not, none of these guys would EVER do that.

Listen... if you want to run 'homebrew', just get a modded wiimote and use it with your computer, heck redirect the output to your tv if you want.

I think they LIKE it when you mod the wiimote.

Technology

Submission + - Henry Kissinger says burn 'em if you got 'em. (foxnews.com) 1

El Fantasmo writes: "My main point is, "Who decides who gets to have advanced technologies such as nuclear energy?" and "Why can't countries/governments just come out and say e.g., 'Hey, Iran, we just don't trust that you won't turn Israel into a sheet of green glass.' when they suspect the technology to be used to harm?"

An interview of Henry Kissinger by Greta van Susteren sparked this. Why is it OK for Henry Kissinger to tell Iran that they have no reason to pursue nuclear energy because they have plenty of natural gas and oil to burn? Who is the United States to forbid "environmentally friendly" energies? Yes, I understand that the precess for nuclear fuel enrichment and weapons grade are exactly the same and Iran isn't open about what's actually going on, but does that mean they can't have nuclear energy until they have nuclear weapons? Kissinger, apparently, doesn't even entertain the idea of an open and inspectable nuclear energy program. Are these the kinds of minds to which we should listen, respect and value? We don't let foreigners inspect our nuclear facilities because they think we're doing something fishy. Who/where are the companies providing all the specialized equipment, ore and/or yellow cake?

I don't think anyone has concrete answers, but I'm wondering how/if the /. community thinks "advanced technologies" should be leveraged or allocated from the "haves" to the "have nots." Please, don't focus too much on US, Iranian politics; it's just a current example."

I think this, and most of the drug related comments on slashdot are funny.

Any kid that grew up with this stuff has a natural hatred of drugs, with good reason.

but I somewhat agree, they could do drug education much better: They could have these school children take a tour of the lives of drug users, and then ask them the simple question: Is this how you want to live your life? I knew what my answer was at 3, and it hasn't changed since.

Sounds like that girl who claimed that an Obama supporter beat her up just before the last election....

I'm sure someone threw some rocks at this guy (no - I'm really not), but I doubt it was a concerted effort to silence him... or even folks from Iran.

It may even be a prank by some other college kids who were A) drunk or B) don't like this kid anyway(or C) a lie).

In any case, no blood no foul, right? That is why we help Iranians in a potential civil war through our twitter accounts instead of sending them material aid that might actually be able to help them in case things start getting really ugly.

If you really want to help them, start translating the anarchist cookbook into the local language, or smuggle copies of it into the country.

Remember folks:
Sticks and stones may break my bones,
but computers can never hurt me.

Tanks and guns can kill me dead,
but twitter will never harm me.

Planes and bombs can level my village,
but a netwar is just crackers having fun.

Comment Hopefully JumpGate will remain JumpGate (Score 4, Interesting) 29

From everything that I had seen on this game, it seemed like the developers were trying to change the formula of the original Jumpgate to something that more closely resembled some of the more successful MMO's on the market, like WoW, and Warhammer. They really lost sight of the fact that the people who played Jumpgate when it was first released in 01, are the same people who were not satisfied with those other styles of games then, and aren't now. Maybe the shock of having friends and family say 'Hey... this isn't jumpgate', will let them take another look at the game they are making a sequel to, and just keep what works, without trying to merge in what works in games made for a completely different audience. In other news - you can still play the original jumpgate free for two weeks. Graphics are dated, space is a little empty on the off hours, but the core of the game is still fun... if you like skill based games that encourage planning.
