Submission + - SANGOMA FIRST QUARTER RESULTS SHOW ANNUAL REVENUE

Tiffany Richardson writes: "Sales of $2.82 million result in net earnings of $0.49 million MARKHAM, ONTARIO, November 29, 2007 — Sangoma Technologies Corporation (TSXV: STC), the premium provider of telephony and network hardware and software products supporting telephony, wide area networks and Internet infrastructure, today released highlights of its unaudited financial results for the quarter ended September 30, 2007. Sales were $2.82 million for the quarter ended September 30, 2007 as compared to $1.55 million for the quarter ended September 30, 2006, an increase of 82%. This represents yet another all time record for the Corporation, despite the unprecedented appreciation of the Canadian dollar. Net income after tax was $0.49 million ($0.017 per share) for the quarter ended September 30, 2007 as compared to $0.40 million ($0.014 per share) for the quarter ended September 30, 2006, an increase of 22%. Net income was affected by the award of stock-based compensation (a non-cash entry) and a foreign exchange loss due to the rapid change in the Canadian dollar/US dollar exchange rate. These two non-operational items together were responsible for a decrease in net earnings for the quarter by over 40%. The Corporation completed the financial quarter ended September 30, 2007 with working capital of $6.01 million, as compared to $5.29 million on June 30, 2007, an increase of 14%. About Sangoma Technologies Corporation Founded in 1984, Sangoma Technologies Corporation is a leading provider of connectivity hardware and software products for telephony and wide area network solutions. Court Orders White House to Disclose Telecom Ties 147

rgiskard01 writes "Glenn Greenwald is reporting at Salon.com on a win for the EFF, in the battle for clarity regarding the telecom surveillance scandal. A federal judge ordered the Bush administration yesterday to accede to the EFF's Freedom of Information Act request. Assuming the White House follows the court order, they would have to make public their lobbying ties to the telecoms industry. 'These disclosures will reveal ... which members of Congress McConnell and other Bush officials privately lobbied. As an argument of last resort, the administration even proposed disclosing these documents on December 31 so that -- as EFF pointed out -- the information would be available only after Congress passed the new FISA bill. The court rejected every administration claim as to why it should not have to disclose these records.'" Greenwald goes on to argue that the order should be leveled against Senators as well, to get a sense of who else is in Ma Bell's pocket.

Submission + - Get your whole genome sequenced -- just $350,000 (venturebeat.com)

David Hamilton writes: "Now you can be just like Jim Watson. (No, not that way.) Boston-area startup Knome today announced that it will sequence your entire genome (PDF link) — all six billion base pairs of it — and then help you analyze and interpret it. A whole-genome scan is roughly 6,000 times more detailed than the SNP scans offered by 23andMe, DecodeMe and Navigenics. The catch? Sticker shock, for one thing — the service costs $350,000, although that should come down quickly as sequencing tech evolves. For another, Knome has limited its offer to the first 20 comers because of capacity constraints, so you'll also have to get in line."

Submission + - Discussion on the superocean steelfish watch (scribd.com)

An anonymous reader writes: The Breitling Superocean Steelfish comes with a water resistance factor of 2000 m (6600 ft). Put differently, you would have to dive to a distance of 1.24 miles before the integrity of the watch casing was compromised. That, albeit a tad 'overkill', is a very impressive technical specification. Now, I don't know anyone personally who has ever dove that deep

Submission + - Is Kinset the future of online shopping? (geek.com)

An anonymous reader writes: Kinset is a 3D virtual environment that mirrors the traditional retail shopping experience, offering you the ability to browse isles of products, zoom in, and even purchase a product that grabs your interest. Still not making sense? Think Second Life, but for shopping. You can browse in the environment and buy things just as you would at a store, but with a lot more information available to you, and then checkout through Amazon.com. Geek.com took a look at the technology by doing some virtual shopping at Brookstone.

Submission + - OrganicBuildingBlocks Discoveredin TitanAtmosphere (techluver.com)

Tech.Luver writes: "Scientists analyzing data gathered by Cassini have confirmed the presence of heavy negative ions in the upper regions of Titan's atmosphere. These particles may act as building blocks for more complicated organic molecules. The discovery was completely unexpected because of the chemical composition of the atmosphere (which lacks oxygen — responsible for forming negative ions in the lower ionosphere of the Earth — and mainly consists of nitrogen and methane). The observation has now been verified on 16 different encounters. ( http://techluver.com/2007/11/29/organic-%E2%80%98building-blocks%E2%80%99-discovered-in-titan%E2%80%99s-atmosphere/ )"

Submission + - Too Old for CS Degree?

An anonymous reader writes: Okay...I've seen articles etc on age discrimination in IT...What do you think, is there an age past which one is "too old" to get a MS in CS if one doesn't have a BS in CS? What if one also has a law degree, does that change the picture? Thoughts?

Submission + - Who is the moron? Dvorak or Google? (wordpress.com)

An anonymous reader writes: Dvorak was recently vocal about his opinions on the Google Phone concept, and needless to say, he wasn't very excited about it. But does his opinion merit attention? Or is he just a blow hard who is out of touch with the way modern cell phones are being used? Fark.com is linking to an interesting article which examines Dvorak's argument, and deconstructs it, pointing out Dvorak's logical errors. The largest being that Dvorak is discounting the value of search on mobile phones, claiming that people don't want to be able to search for information on phones. Considering that search engines pretty much debuted on phones, his comment seems rather short sighted, and misinformed. While Dvorak is complaining that people don't want search on phones, Google is already reaping the profits of their free SMS and voice based search engines already available on all phones.

Submission + - Swiss DMCA quietly adopted (boingboing.net)

roady writes: We have seen a lot of talk about the Canadian DMCA. But few know about the Swiss version recently adopted by law makers, not even the Swiss people. The government and media have been very quiet, probably to avoid a referendum. Indeed, Switzerland is a direct democracy and if 50'000 citizens sign a referendum, the whole country will have a chance to vote against the new copyright law. In this version of the DMCA, sharing a file on P2P networks will land you one year in jail, even though the law mandates a levy on blank media. The history of the law can be read here.
