For $7.99, I can pass on the DVDs....and use the money saved to rent the oddball other titles from another service. Up until now Netflix had complete vendor lock-in for my wallet. Now I'll learn more about iTunes/Amazon. Encouraging users to learn about the competition can't be a good idea.

I made the mistake of trying to read one of the patents. I have new-found respect for the staff employeed by the USPO. Good heavens, how someone can make a living reading these on a daily basis is beyond me.

I don't feel too bad...failure to apply in plain English (except for technical details of a specific implementation) should be immediate grounds for dismissal of a patent. That you can apply with garbage like this and get a patent is the result of precedent. That said...that's the fault of management, not the poor kids fresh out of law school working there until they can find a better job.

Not everything I have needs to be hacked. I appreciate the stability of the Android OS, and its pretty much open enough for what I use it for. I unlocked my Droid 1, and had problems with CyanogenMod and freezes, so when I got the Droid 2 Global, I decided not to root in unless I needed to.

For me, it's a way to "have" less. Rather than buying a Droid 2 Global, I overclocked my Droid 1 to the point where it was fast enough to keep up. Unlocking and overclocking meant I could happily use a device for an extra year or two after its planned obsolescence, and save a few bucks.

Yup. Unless you pay out the nose for an expensive "world phone", your options are basically AT&T or T-Mobile, and with T-Mobile gone, AT&T will be the only remaining GSM carrier in the United States.

Aren't the carriers converging on LTE? It was my impression that the LTE phones will all be worldphones shortly... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/3GPP_Long_Term_Evolution

They might have to accept people that don't look Japanese, but speak? Seriously? I don't think it's too much to ask for the people caring for your elderly to be able to communicate with them without calling in the floor translator. I can't imagine how frustrating it would be to have to pantomime out what you need from the people who are being paid to care for you.

Yeah, you'd want to speak the language before being promoted to direct patient care. But you can work to learn the language while doing the other 90% of the work -- cleaning toilets, doing laundry, delivering laundry, cooking, doing dishes, being the second set of hands for any patient care, changing light bulbs, driving the delivery vehicles, building the next nursing home...

That's a Glenn Beck sort of question if I've ever heard one.

Beta 9 is more stable than previous releases, and about even with Firefox 3 in my opinion. And that's what counts -- whatever they may say about the NUMBER of outstanding bugs, it's only the bugs that hit a typical user on a typical day that matter for the perceived stability of a program. With a few more weeks of spit and polish, Firefox 4 should be even with the competition in terms of daily stability. The fact the Mozilla advertises its bug list more than, say, IE9 should not make people think its known bug list is longer than IE9's.

Firefox's library of well-functioning and stable extensions (and...cough...other extensions) is larger. If you need those plug-ins, it's a no-brainer. If you plan to use the browser "stock" it really comes down to personal preference on the interface and what happens to be more stable on your system. Firefox 3 has gotten rather slow and long in the tooth, so my personal browser preference (this week) runs something like Firefox 4 beta > Opera > Chrome > Safari > Firefox 3 > wget > Internet Explorer.
