Comment Intel is looking for a bailout. (Score 2) 129

I agree with Bernie Sanders, I watched Intel's CEO talk about this bill, and in my opinion it's just a thinly veiled attempt by Intel for government welfare to bail Intel out of the very poor decisions they've made over the last decade with respect to AMD, ARM, and now RISC-V.

Intel finally realized that they will never retake the lead against AMD with AMD's "amd64 x86_64" instruction set architecture. Intel also realized that the server market is now forward focused on RISC-V, which is a completely open source instruction set architecture. So Intel is scrambling to stay relevant.

That said, we do need to focus on creating a strong domestic silicon supply chain for national security reasons, because China's authoritarian ideologies do not aline with the United States interests, so if Intel wants to make formal concessions that they will fully get behind RISC-V and/or other patient free instruction set architectures or open standards cooperatives I would support them.

The biggest threat right now is Nvidia's closed source instruction set architecture, the whole ARM, and Mellanox, deal was to strategically position them into being the next "closed source Microsoft"... Jensen Huang doesn't seem to know how to play nicely with others.

Actually, it's registered as compliant to the Single UNIX Specification (UNIX 03).

Given that the GNU/Linux SysV userland toolchain is the only one that anyone cares about at this point, I'd say this specification is all but worthless now. I cut my teeth on FreeBSD, and I really wished BSD style unix won the unix wars. However, it didn't, and now we have have two POSIX API standards, one is the de facto standard ("Linux/GNU") and the other is a de jure standard ("macOS"), and at this point having to remember two different implementations of the POSIX standard is just frustrating as hell.

It has nothing to do with that, the issue was he broke nearly all of the covenants of the unix philosophy and it was forced upon the industry because he worked for Red Hat and they adopted it without consideration for the rest of the larger Linux community.

I also am tired of hearing the same old nonsense that studying certain subjects provides no benefit to society. Gender Studies, Racial Studies, even Medieval Music are worthy of the pursuit of knowledge. If no one studies these subjects in depth then we as a society become dumber. Half of the US is actually proud that they are stupid. It is sad.

Yes it is sad. Many paths lead to enlightenment, however, the path that he decided to take is unfortunately the same one that the lemmings took.

Why 32, weâ(TM)ve known for a long time that even that is too much for many people. A 24 hour (3x8, 4x6) work week would be much more pragmatic for our modern nuclear family. With 3x8 shifts one spouse can work Monday through Wednesday, while the other spouse can work Thursday through Saturday. This eliminates the need for childcare, giving both spouses equal opportunity for a career as the spouse who is not at work can watch the children and manage the household. This also gives each spouse three days of space to be themselves and then on Sundays theyâ(TM)ll have the whole day to do things together as a couple. For those wanting to work more, two 24 hour jobs would be 48 hours⦠which is manageable for some individuals.
