Oregon To Let Students Use Spell Check on State Exams 235

Starting in 2011, the Oregon Department of Education will let students spell check their work before submitting state exams. From the article: "The move is supposed to help the assessments focus less on typos and more on their writing skills. 'We are not letting a student's keyboarding skills get in the way of being able to judge their writing ability,' said state Superintendent Susan Castillo. 'As we're using technology to improve what we're doing with assessments as a nation, we believe that spell check will be one of those tools.'"

Information may well want to be free but it is the control of information which is currently controlled by government, media and corporations which is our biggest threat.

This is just absurd. Who cares about privacy and also trusts Microsoft and uses IE? IE is blocked in all of my firewalls from ever accessing the Internet (and every once in a while that does catch and prevent something that is trying to "phone home"). Thanks for being so concerned about my security Microsoft, but I will just keep and block the current version that you forced into my operating system, for security I'll use other browsers. When someone insists on IE , I "just say no". My bank insisted that I use IE for on-line banking. My new bank didn't.

The kind of people who will click 'I like it' at every whim on any site they come accross - and feel safe because Microsoft/IE is protecting them,,,,these are the people who are worth money to Microsoft/Facebook et al....

Here in the UK most major retailers have 'loyalty' cards and clubcards to track/analyse 'consumers' - credit/debit card companies can only really see how much you spent in a certain shop [store] - over time I would imagine you can build a nice 'consumer profile' from these cards [hence the personalised offers you get]

Many people in the UK are more than willing to agree to their behavior being logged and analysed - and sometimes you get free shit......

Apple does this - Apple does that...... this never had anything to do with Apple censorship - Apple didn't want to get sued so a pre-emptive blanket ban on anything that could cause a problem seeems logical - you pay your money. Can't help thinking the Apple defamation/libel yes men had more to do with this than 'censorship' - Apple covering their ass. They not forcing you to use this app to view this cartoon [yet?]

So this iApp downloads a file from a server and displays it - something like a http client.
