Submission + - Is Mac OS X abandoning open source?

An anonymous reader writes: Mac OS X 10.4.8 was released over a month ago, however the latest Darwin release on http://www.opensource.apple.com/darwinsource/ is still 10.4.7. Does this, along with the shutdown of opendarwin.org, indicate that Apple is moving away from open source?

Submission + - Not allowed to vote in Maryland

JeremyDuffy writes: "It's a proven fact that e-voting is insecure and lacks auditing controls that would provide any kind of confidence that your vote counts. When I went to polls and refused to use the machines, they told me I couldn't vote. Apparently, people who are knowledgable about computer security aren't allowed to vote in Maryland. Submission + - Solar power for all american homes at no cost

Fabrice Murgia writes: "The Citizenre Corporation has unveiled its plan to provide Solar Power to all American homes at virtually no cost to the home owners. The Program, called REnU — which stands for Residential Energy Unit — represents a giant leap toward energy independence and preservation of the environment.

Simply put, The Citizenre Corporation will pay for, install, own and operate the solar systems. Home owners are completely relieved from the hassle of obtaining permits, waiting for incentive rebates, dealing with engineering, financing or any other concern typically related to the adoption of a solar system.

All the home owners are required to do is to pay a rental fee for the solar electricity generated by the solar panels and, since the solar panels are engineered to meet your exact needs — based on your historical usage — your new electrical bill will be equal or lower to your current bill.

What is even more appealing is that, with the REnU program, home owners have the ability to fix their electrical rates for up 25 years gaining an incredible advantage against increasing utility rates. How is that possible? The fuel supply for solar panels — sunlight — is free, renewable and unlimited, and the solar panels have a life expectancy of over 25 years. All you get is clean, green, ever-present power — day after day.

As if that were not enough, Citizenre also takes on the responsibility of monitoring the performance of your REnU and ensuring that it is performing at its optimum capability. This value-added service is offered at no cost to the home owners and is already paid for by your rental fee.

The REnU program is made possible by "net metering" laws". Under net metering laws — present in most states — home owners have the right to generate power at their homes and receive the full retail value for the excess generated from their current utility company.

Solar Energy — one of the most benign methods of power generation known — has recently gained incredible financial and political support. The Energy Policy Act, signed into law in August 2005, has introduced numerous and substantial incentives to promote clean and renewable energy and created new tax credits for residential solar power systems.

President Bush, in his State of the Union address has reiterated his support for renewable energy technologies and unveiled his goal of reducing our national dependence on foreign oil by 75-percent by the year 2025.

The California Public Utilities Commission, with its 2.9 billion dollar rebate plan for solar installations has become the undisputed biggest national supporter of solar power. Its goal is to convert as much as six percent of the peak energy demands in the state to solar platforms. About 15,000 homes in the state already have solar systems.

The U.S. Energy Secretary, Samuel Bodman, said the Energy Department is going to be increasing its promotion and funding of renewable energy initiatives nationwide.

If you are passionate and serious about preserving the environment and want to contribute to cleaner, green energy independence, Citizenre REnU program is what you have been looking for."

Submission + - Should the Web be ADA-Compliant?

AgentPaper writes: "As reported in today's New York Times, the National Federation of the Blind has filed suit against mega-retailer Target, claiming violations of the Americans with Disabilities Act on the company's Website. In the class-action suit filed in US District Court in San Francisco, the NFB claims that Target's Website is not compatible with text-to-speech software used by blind and visually impaired customers, and that this incompatibility represents a lack of accessibility in a "public accommodation" as defined by the ADA. The suit has major implications for both e-tail and the Internet at large, since if found in favor of the NFB, it would legally define Webspace as publicly accessible space, and thus subject to the same laws and regulations as a physical space such as a building. Should companies be legally required to make their Websites accessible for users with various handicaps? More generally, should Webspace be treated like physical space in legal proceedings?"

Submission + - The end of net privacy in Brazil

DieNadel writes: The Brazilian senate is considering a bill that will make it a crime to join a chat, blog or download from the Internet without fulling identifying oneself first.
If approved, it will be a crime, punishable with up to 4 years of jail time, to disseminate virus or trojans, unauthorizedly access data banks or networks and send e-mail, join chat, write a blog or download content anonymously.
Privacy groups and Internet Providers are very concerned, and are trying to lobby against the bill, but it seems they won't have much success on it.

Submission + - UK ID Cards required for 'modernity'

pryonic writes: "The BBC is reporting that Prime Minister Tony Blair stated ID cards are necessary for the sake of "modernity". I read this as meaning the technology exists so it should be used. Is this a case of using technology for technologies sake, or is there a more sinister reason? Is modernity even a word? I fear Britain is slowly turning into a police state and this ID Card (linked to a DNA database) will be the final nail in the coffin of a once free society."

Anti Videogame Judge Seeks Re-election In Missouri 76

nevarre writes, "US District Judge Stephen Limbaugh (yes, he IS related to Rush) along with other local judges will be up for retention vote status this November 7th on the Missouri state ballot. You may remember him from his ruling in 2002 that videogames are not a conveyance for ideas and are therefore not protected as 'free speech' even though he felt that stopping fax spam would violate 'commercial speech' protections under the First Amendment."

Submission + - Aboutus.org posting WHOIS info on crawled pages

An anonymous reader writes: www.Aboutus.org is crawling webpages and posting the WHOIS info of all domain name owners! They have essentially created a reverse domain name lookup. If you google someones name, their aboutus.org "page" will come up in the results...along with their domain name registration info. Anyone can now be googled to see what domain names they own! You can narrow your results with the person's city, state, zip or phone number! They even provide a google map linked right to your address! Please make this a story and turn the heat up on these jerks! This is WRONG!
