Comment Intel Just Needs to Release the 7xx Cards (Score 1) 64

All these press junkets and releases are useless since no tech enthusiasts ever takes the performance numbers that any manufacturer releases at face value. Intel just needs to release the d*mn cards ASAP at a "we'll ignore the sh*tty drivers" price point and let the good tech sites publish unbiased benchmarks.

None of the info released by Intel is doing them any favors since it's lower-middle of the pack performance when the top performers get all the attention (a fact that AMD/ATI knows all too well.)

Comment Adding Heat Pumps to ACs doesn't Cost Thousands $ (Score 3, Insightful) 161

Heat pumps are just AC's run in reverse. It just takes some relatively minor mechanical and control systems upgrades to make an existing AC to also be a heat pump. My portable air conditioner has the "heat pump" feature and the whole unit costs less than $500 US.

Sure, a huge stand alone heat pump could cost thousands of dollars, but in context of the article, ADDING heat pump functionality to existing AC designs to build new units is relatively inexpensive.

The research is for heat sources that are hot enough to vaporize water, so at 100 degrees celcius or higher, that cause vapor bubbles to form on the heating surface that reduce heat transfer.

Most heat sinks in computer systems don't get that hot, so this research is not applicable to consumer liquid coolers for CPUs and GPUs since the point is to keep the temperature of the chip under 100 degrees Celcius. If you've hit 100 degrees, the CPU/GPU will already be throttling itself.

Politicians that focus too much on a popular idea that when implemented measured amounts is good, but when forced on everything at once is bad. They should have incrementally increased the amount of organic farming and then when production sagged more than the politicians expected (but as predicted by the experts,) then they wouldn't be in such a bind.

Similar to how the German Government shut down all of the German Nuclear Power Plants right after Fukushima, which made them more dependent on fossil fuels for generation of electricity and now more beholden to Russian oil. Sony had its "compact" versions of its Experia Z and then X series of phones that had the same guts, but just a smaller, lower resolution screen in the early to mid 2010's. They didn't sell. Most people didn't want to pay almost full sized phone prices for a small phone.

Companies would make them if they sold well enough. Should I trust the niche wants of "the entrepreneur behind the wildly loved by a small number of people, niche, pebble watch, who's company went bankrupt because not enough people wanted to buy them" to feasibly propose a product that could be brought to market and generate sustainable profit?

I actually BOUGHT one of the Experia Z1 Compact phones and liked it, so it's not like I don't share some of the same niche preferences. But I guess I'm realistic enough to realize that some of my wants aren't shared by enough other people to implement in a consumer product.

Oh, it mentions TikTok and Influencers.
