MPAA Scores First P2P Jury Conviction 335

An anonymous reader writes "The MPAA must be celebrating. According to the BitTorrent news site Slyck.com, the Department of Justice is proclaiming their first P2P criminal copyright conviction, against an Elite Torrents administrator. The press release notes, 'The jury was presented with evidence that Dove was an administrator of a small group of Elite Torrents members known as "Uploaders," who were responsible for supplying pirated content to the group. At sentencing, which is scheduled for Sept. 9, 2008, Dove faces a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison.'"

twistedcubic writes: Red Hat and Novell have been sued for patent infringement in Texas by IP Innovation, LLC. and Technology Licensing Corporation. On October 9, IP Innovation filed suit claiming Red Hat and Novell violated U.S. patents 5072412, 5533183, and 5394521. The patents were originally assigned to Xerox Corporation. A cursory look suggests the patents involve virtual workspaces and sticky windows with different properties in each virtual workspace. Groklaw has the scoop.

Asok writes: BBC reports that Dell has officially chosen Ubuntu to be the linux flavor on high end Dell laptops. The compatibilty will be ensured by London based Canonical. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/6610901.stm. From the article: "Dell are going to work with us to make sure Ubuntu works fully on its hardware," said Chris Kenyon, Ubuntu's director of business development. "For us it is a strong endorsement of Ubuntu and the unique support model we provide," he told the BBC. Dell has not yet confirmed which computers it will sell with Ubuntu pre-installed, only to say that it would offer Ubuntu 7.04 as an option on select consumer models in the United States in the coming weeks Reports on internet bulletin boards suggest that Dell will offer Ubuntu on an e-series Dimension desktop, a high-performance XPS desktop, and an e-series Inspiron laptop.

Submission + - How do you advocate Linux in 5 mintues?

xtracto writes: I just returned from buying certain Linux magazine. While looking at the "Computing" stand in the library and right after I grabbed a copy of the Linux magazine a guy asked me if I used Linux, after that, the made told me he had tried to use Linux but that he found it difficult. I told him the first things that came to my mind, this is, that it depended on the distribution (to what answered that he tried using Kubuntu). I recommended him to look for a Linux User Group near his hometown (he told me he was not from nearby). What would you tell this kind of people?, Not so long ago a relative who is completely computer illiterate started talking about Linux (to my surprise) but the general thought is that "it is harder than Windows". What do you people say to advocate Linux, in very few words, considering people that tried to use it before or people that has never used it?

This has lead to some abuse of the program with some customers bringing back TVs that are years old and still getting their original purchase price refunded. During late December, the Consumerist ran an exclusive story claiming that, starting January 1, 2007, Costco will be limiting returns to 30 days due to abuse of its generous policies. After ringing in the New Year, we contacted Costco to get the real scoop on the possibility of a stricter policy. We placed calls nationwide to Costco locations inquiring about any chance in policy. According to every customer service counter that we contacted, none said that there was any change in the store's return policies. Ctrl+Alt+De1337 writes "The Mactel-Linux folks have now successfully booted Linux on a 17" Core Duo iMac. They used the elilo bootloader, a modified kernel, and a hacked vesafb to boot from a USB drive. No GUI pictures for now, just white text on a black background. The distro of choice was Gentoo, and instructions and patches are promised this weekend."

nmccart writes "Google gave testimony on Friday to the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on International Relations. They discussed their decision to build google.cn in China. Elliot Schrage, the vice president for global communications and public affairs at Google describes how these China-based servers fit in to Google's mantra of 'Don't be evil.' Google hopes to use this as an opportunity to help bring global censorship into the spotlight of American politics. Will it work?"
