Submission + - Wikia busted purchasing FFXIClopedia for $200,000?

An anonymous reader writes: Final Fantasy XI (FFXI), Square-Enix's unique entry into the MMORPG
market, is not the most popular of the genre. Nonetheless, one of its
strengths lies in the broad community support that it inspires in its
fans. A number of unique metadata sites have sprung up around it,
including the groundbreaking FFXIAH (http://www.ffxiah.com) Auction
House tracking service.

One of the newer entries to this list is FFXIclopedia
(http://www.ffxiclopedia.org), an FFXI wiki. As with most wikis, the
content was provided principally by the users and the community. So
what happens when businesses notice such a grass-roots niche market?
Apparently, the answer is: a cover-up of misspent fund-raiser moneys,
and a sale of the content to Wikia for USD $200,000 in cash and stock
options. Source: http://euphidime.com/wp/?p=4

AMD Finally Unveils Barcelona Chip 118

Justin Oblehelm writes "AMD has finally unveiled its first set of quad-core processors, three months after its original launch date due to its "complicated" design. Barcelona comes in three categories: high-performance, standard-performance and energy-efficient server models, but only the standard (up to 2.0 GHz) and energy-efficient (up to 1.9 GHz) categories will be available at launch. The high-performance Opterons, together with higher frequencies of the standard and energy-efficient chips, are expected in the out in the fourth quarter of this year. But it's far from clear that this is the product that will help right AMD's ship."

ISO Says No To Microsoft's OOXML Standard 315

qcomp writes "The votes are in and Microsoft has lost for now, reports the FFII's campaign website OOXML. The 2/3 majority needed to proceed with the fast-track standardization has not been achieved. Now the standard will head to the ballot resolution meeting to address the hundreds of technical comments submitted along with the votes." Here is yesterday's speculation as to how the vote would turn out.

Feed Techdirt: Wal-Mart Tries Social Networking Again... But This Time With An Actual Social Ne (techdirt.com)

You may recall (or, actually, probably not) that last year around this time, Wal-Mart decided to launch its very own social network as a back-to-school promotion, except it took out all the fun parts of social networking, and then put in fake kids who talked about the clothes they were buying at Wal-Mart. It was either entirely ignored or mocked by the few who came across it. After a few months, the experiment was quietly abandoned -- and almost no one noticed. This year, Wal-Mart is back in the social networking game, but at least they've realized that rather than copying the hot trend of the year, it might be better to embrace the leader. To that end, the company is launching a Facebook group to try to get college kids heading back to school to "design your dorm room together." It's still a bit cheesy, and may not attract too many users, but at least the company finally realized it needed to go where the real kids were actually hanging out. Maybe next year the company will realize that it helps to have an application that's actually fun or useful as well.
