Submission + - Twitter now throttles traffic to Facebook, Instagram, Bluesky, and more (washingtonpost.com)

Khopesh writes:

The company formerly known as Twitter has been slowing the speed with which users could access links to the New York Times, Facebook and other news organizations and online competitors, a move that appeared targeted at companies that have drawn the ire of owner Elon Musk.

Users who clicked a link on Musk’s website, now called X, for one of the targeted websites were made to wait about five seconds before seeing the page, according to tests conducted Tuesday by The Washington Post.

The delayed websites included X’s online rivals Facebook, Instagram, Bluesky and Substack, as well as the Reuters wire service and the Times. All of them have previously been singled out by Musk for ridicule or attack.

The Post updated its story to say that X removed throttles on "some of the sites" a few hours after their report was published.

Too many banks/investment firms put too much money into the tech economy and they are going to take a bath, but others are going to buy up those properties for cheap and our downtown businesses will be more diverse and less vulnerable to this kind of thing down the road. Frankly this is the realignment the bay area needed.

Peacock revolutionized what exactly? You mean the forked Hulu playbook? If self-aggrandizement was a virtue, these people would be saints. Apparently her connections to advertisers is going to help bring advertisers back to Twitter, but whose going to bring the audience back? Personally I have no interest or use for Twitter. I also think Jack Dorseys next project is going to eat Twitters lunch.

Let me just say at the top, I love the goal of the Internet Archive. I've been to the physical place and had lunch with the staff. I've talked with the CTO about what possibilities there might be for me to work there. I like these people. So all that being said, I've probably only found the IA useful about 1% of the time I've looked for things. The search is horrendous in that there's such a glut of search results that are not relevant to my search beyond a shared word that finding anything is really hard. My expectation these days is maybe I'll find something, but probably not.
