Comment Re:the trolls are out in force (Score 1) 693

No, I'm not a troll. I had Google SafeSearch turned on to the Strict setting. I turned it off and got the expected results.

Try turning it on then repeat the searches. You'll get the same result as I previously did.

So maybe Google's search engine is fine, but their SafeSearch is broken. Either way, it's a fail.

Comment Google is failing (Score 1) 693

That Google would need to set up a sting makes one wonder if they are not a little insecure about their engine. In the past week I have run into a couple of situations where Google absolutely failed.

Try searching Google for "Martin Guitars" or "Jet City Amps". The official sites aren't even on the first page of results on Google. On Bing? They're both the first result.

I hate Microsoft as much as they deserve (which is a lot) but whenever I am unimpressed with Google, I try Bing and am getting more and more impressed with it. I can't blame them for using their competition to their advantage.

Physicists Discover Universal "Wet-Dog Shake" Rule 97

Dog owners can sleep easy tonight because physicists have discovered how rapidly a wet dog should oscillate its body to dry its fur. Presumably, dogs already know. From the article: "Today we have an answer thanks to the pioneering work of Andrew Dickerson at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta and a few buddies. But more than that, their work generates an interesting new conundrum about the nature of shaken fur dynamics. Dickerson and co filmed a number of dogs shaking their fur and used the images to measure the period of oscillation of the dogs' skin. For a labrador retriever, this turns out to be 4.3 Hz."

Comment Re:I can't take girl gamers seriously (Score 1) 284

You completely missed my point. I don't need or want to know if/that other gamers are girls. I would rather not know. I fail to see how it is important for me to know. No, I don't need to celebrate any gamer's femininity. No, I am not looking for female attention as I play. To the contrary, I think the attention whoring of girl gamers and those who would give them that attention detracts from the gaming experience as a whole.

You make the argument that just "being a girl in a game gets you a LOT of attention". But why, then, must girl gamers make sure that everybody knows they are girls? If they didn't want all the attention, they'd just play, just being gamers. Not "girl gamers".

That said, it sounds like I am playing different games than you. My online gaming is primarily in the realm of FPS games and parlor/card games. I don't play MMORPGs, and I think voice chat in games is silly.
