Requiring lower-capacity storage on devices running Windows, especially laptops, seems like a good way to boost subscriptions to Microsoft's cloud-based apps and storage (Office 365, OneDrive, etc.).

Hopefully, regulators will ensure that such pushes occur in a transparent fashion so that customers have a choice of third-party services (Box, DropBox, Google, Zoho, and so forth) without having to use Microsoft's "solutions," especially since they are solving problems created by Microsoft's guidelines for reducing storage capacities in the first place.

There seems to be the impression that these are completely separate companies doing this. They are not.

In 2020, NortonLifeLock, Inc. acquired Avira, the acquisition was completed in 2020. Avira, in turn, was in the process of itself of acquiring BullGuard, which completed in 2021.

NortonLifeLock, Inc. also acquired Avast in 2021, which itself acquired AVG in 2016.

This means that NortonLifeLock, Inc owns the Avast, AVG, Avira and BullGuard brands in addition to its own Norton brand.

Whether or not NortonLifeLock implements cryptomining in their other brands is anyone's guess, but if it is successful in bringing in additional revenue for shareholders, that may be a foregone conclusion.

I am trying to get my head around this, but the one thing that I do not understand is, simply, what problem does this solve for Reddit's users? Is it simply for Reddit to create an imaginary market?

Reddit's attempts to generate additional sources of revenue beyond advertising seem to have largely fallen flat, is this some way to get its customers to increase their advertising spend?

The other concern that pops immediately into my head is that Reddit has consistently been very poor at handling various forms of abuse and fraud on their platform. The 16-year-old company only stood up a trust and safety team about 4-5 years ago, if I recall correctly, and the results of their activities had largely been reactive and ham-fisted, at least when there are results.

So, I have to ask myself, who exactly is this entry into the blockchain for, and who does it benefit?

I bought $1000USD of Doge back when it took 12 of them to make a single penny just to have fun with on IRC. We set up a doge wallet bot and used tipping in Doge as a way to encourage productive/constructive comments and contributions to our little channel, as well as educating people about crypto. I ended up giving away at least half of the Doges to various channel dwellers just for the fun of it. (Using random soaks & tips of 100 doge here & there.)

Fast forward to now it's around .13c per doge and the coin I so liberally threw around like confetti actually has some value. It feels really good to have contributed in a positive way to crypto-currency awareness and to see those contributions actually have value.

I still have quite a bit of Doge left and it has oddly turned out to be one of the most entertaining & enjoyable successful investments I've made.

Clearly they are no longer just a neutral platform. They are now a publisher that makes editorial decisions.

Everyone libeled or defamed on YouTube can now sue Google instead of some random content creator. Google has extremely deep pockets. Lawyers are going to cash in.
