Journal Journal: Dearz comments
Dearz:
"Doug just writes a load of rubbish. "I went to the theatre today, this is how you work the lights". Ben writes some good stuff."
If he had a blog, he'd write about our trips to the moon.
The End.

I just finished a world class rant about my thoughts on going to university, and why I can't wait, when IE crashed. M$ stink, but, if I do go to university (clever link), I won't have to use an operating system by them for several years... woo
Went to Worcester today. I had planned to buy some jeans and hopefully a coat, but all i bought was a t-shirt, a DVD and a book. I'm not very good at this. I also managed to park in the NCP car park and leave the car with the drivers window down, enabling anyone, had they wanted to, to steal my Rhomba. They didn't however.
Franz Ferdinand are extremely cool. Alex (my sister) bought the album, which I've been playing non-stop (a copy of, I didn't take the CD from her).
Went to a meal at Ask this evening with Lou, Becky, another Lou and Dan. I can hardly remember it already, just so tired. I've spent hours coding and writing for Cosmos, but still have so much to do, and it's due next week. I should've done more work before...
On a brighter note, I think (I think) I'm in the NME. On the poster for Funeral For A Friend at Birmingham Academy, there's a guy who looks just like me in the place where me and Rich were standing. As Dan points out, it could've been anyone, but still, it also could have been me. So I'm claiming it.
OK, I went to Reading today to see the uni. This was the last one I'm going to see. UEA (East Anglia) think I'm going to see them on Saturday, but they're wrong.
Reading was... good. Yeah, it was good. It wasn't as good as Manchester, which was great, but it was better that Leeds, which was not that good. So, on my form, I'm going to put down Manchester as my first choice, then Reading as my second.
There are some complications however, the interview at Manchester apparently went better than I expected, and they've given me the opportunity to upgrade from a BSc to an MEng, which is what I agreed to at the interview, but it wasn't confirmed then that they would change the offer. However, they're now asking for AAB rather than ABB, but on the condition that if I don't get AAB, but do get ABB, I'll be resubmitted automatically for the BSc (which is what I originally wanted...)
Confused yet? Well, I am. Not to worry, go take another look at the pics from Lou's party.
Went to a party at Lou's last night. I've felt ill all day, mostly cos of the weird jungle-juice substitute we made I think.
gThumb has great features. I took my camera, which Roz commandeered (which was ok), and she took loads of pictures, so I put them all into gThumb, which made them into thmbnails on one big image, brilliant! See the results here.
BTW, the photos are all small so that you can't see too much detail... many people would never want to anyone to see all the pics...
PS, if you didn't understand any of that above, click here to see the pics from the party.
(This first part was written 13/02/04. I just didn't upload it.)
Last night I dreamt about Enlightenment. Not about the Bhudist theogy of enlightenmnt, or even of some sort of enlightenment involving understanding or discovering something new, but about the Enlightenment Window Manager. That's really weird. Maybe I should install it.
Yesterday I went with my dad to go and see Manchester University. The trains were really crap, and we ended up missing the first tour, but that didn't matter too much.
Originally, I hadn't planned to go to Manchester (I only put it down to fill up space on my UCAS form), but I really enjoyed yesterday. The university feels good, the town seems good and the lecturers were all really good at... well, they all seemed to be passionate about the subject and good at teaching it. The interview went well (I think), and they gave me an offer of ABB, the same as Leeds. Basically I've decided that I wouldn't mind going to Manchester.
I am now without a doubt that Computer Science is the right degree course for me. The Only trouble is where? Out of Manchester, Leeds and Reading, I have no real preference. They're all respected in Computer Science, and they're all in good locations. But... should I be making more of the choice between the cities of Manchester, Leeds and Reading (bearing in mind London is less than 20 mins on the train from Reading)? I really have no idea.
Might be going out tomorrow night. To Evesham. Maybe.
Sanity in Evesham is closing down. I've complained about this already, so I won't do so again. They're selling off loads of old stock for pennies (some CD's were 10p). I bought a pile of stuff (37 CD's/DVD's) and still only spent a few pounds. Admittedly, a lot of the discs have no cases, but given what I paid, I'm not too worried. Found a great double CD by "Cujo", but, not having the case I have no tracklisting, so I have no idea what I'm listening to. This is the sort of time where Discogs excels I think.
(This second part is being written today, 15/02/04)
Went to see Leeds University yesterday (with my mum this time). I was pretty disappointed with the whole thing to be honest. The University itself didn't seem as engaging, but it was more the attitudes of the people there (staff and students) that put me off. We weren't shown anything interesting on the tours, the talks we listened to weren't even about the subject... I guess I just felt that in contrast to Manchester, everyone seemed a little less passionate about the work/research. That sounds like a really lame way of saying things, but it's difficult to express my feelings about the Universities, I just got a better feeling from Manchester.
Last night we went to Evesham with the intention of getting quite drunk, and fairly well succeeded. Lou was extremely drunk (when I got there even, and I was quite late). That may explain her seeming so unhappy this morning. Not sure what happened to Doug and Powly, they left in the middle of the night. Dearz wanted me to mention him so I will. There, I did it see. Dearz Dearz' Earz.
Still listening to those 37 CD's. Given that I didn't have any idea what I was buying for the most part, I think I did quite well!
Went to Manchester today to see the university, had an interview and was really impressed with the whole experience (especially seeing as I didn't originally want to go there). I was going to write more (there is a lot more I could say)... but I'm tired. So I'm going to bed, goodnight.
This is the most time-sapping game I've played in years. It just absorbs you into it's world, and ends up making you actually care whether "neighbouring cities want to make trade deals..." or not.
I went into Evesham on Saturday to look for a new (real) modem, and nowhere could sell me one. Next, I went into PC World in Cheltenham, only one of the staff there even understood what I was asking for. He was quite amused that I should want to but such a thing, but was sympathetic that they didn't sell it anyway. Ho Hum. Anyway, SimCity...
I'm in awe of the detail that has gone into this game. I've played for nearly ten hours in three days and I still get the impression that I've barely touched the surface. It's huge, in every sense.
Firstly, the addition of regions to the mix. A city is no longer an independent entity, you can (no, you must) create links between cities, and the landscape of one city must match at it's edges with the cities it touches. There is huge depth to the game, you can follow an individual Sim's life, catering for it's needs etc... but this becomes a game in itself almost.
Cities now come in three sizes. I've only played on the small and medium sizes, and even on the medium sizes I found that managing a whole city at once is a HUGE challenge.
Inevitably, with it being ten to one and me not having done any homework (because I've been playing SimCity...) this post is a bit of a mess. I'm sorry. I think more will come of SimCity.
Untill next time...
My site is changing... again. I change this site so often that most people don't see it in between changes.
This site (http://www.dyefade.net) will no longer be the main site for this blog. If I'm going to post a blog/journal entry, I'll put it on slashdot.org(where it can be accessed via slashdot.org/~dyefade/journal). I'll put a link on my homepage to the blog. Also, the whole thing will remain archived (and mirrored, though not so strictly) on the homepage.
For a time, this will render dyefade.net fairly useless, given that there will no longer be any important/current blog content. This should not be a problem however... I'm having to train myself to stay on track with postings and not just write about whatever random thought is in my head at the time. However, other articles/things that don't really belong in the blog can go on the site. I'm gonna start learning PHP/MySQL, and get some scripts set up.
I have no idea whether Slashdot is a good place to host a journal or not. It is a good place to get tech news though, so it can't be bad.
This is a test - messing about with the features on Slashdot. Also deciding whether to move (or at least copy) my blog from dyefade.net to here...
