I know you don't crosspost to Slashdot, but did you not say, and I quote,

"I haven't regularly posted to my journal here on Slashdot in a couple years. Meanwhile, I've posted over 1000 blog posts elsewhere, and recently started using simulpost tools to post to several different SN sites I'm on. However, there are still folks here who aren't in those places, and, of course, there's the wonderful world of the Firehose and the exhilarating risk that some of my idle musings might hit the front page. (If I'm averaging almost three posts per day, there's bound to be something interesting in there...)

What I'd like is the ability to post to my Slashdot account using my own script. I remember the Early days of Slashdot where some folks were using third-party clients to participate in the commenting system. It'd be nice if it were possible for us to do that again today, but with journals."

Sounds like someone's little project waiting to be born ;)

Correct about the fourth slot. It will run slower if you don't put the same speed stick in. Otherwise, yes I could get 4 GB sticks. But I've only found one set so far and it cost $799, so I think I'll pass on that.

The reason I wish I had 12 now is because Workstation allocates all the memory for a VM at once, rather than ESX/ESXi which starts at the minimum and grows as needed to the limit. So running more than 2 big VM's and 4-5 small VM's will cost me about 5.2 GB. My system still runs fine, but just think of how much more I could get done if I had twice what I do now.

Thank you for the links. Seeing my old school user page was nice.

I wasn't however able to modify the layout to my pleasing. I remember when they had the "beta" layout, but now it seems to not stick out. Call me stupid, but I'm guessing it's the Dynamic Index under Settings. It seems that the site doesn't care when I tell it to use Classic Index and turn off all of the other bells and whistles. I still get the same old, new crappy boxes. I really despise that automatic page extender when you get to the bottom, and the filters.

By the way, I saw your post about the (11). I also have that, but it wasn't always 11. As I was attempting to make Slashdot usable again I found that if I clicked on the Today box at the bottom of the page the number would change to (1). Then scroll all the way back down to the bottom, let the page extend, and the number turns *voila* into (12).

My conclusion?

The number has to do with the stupid filtering system.

What was the original piece of VMWare software you were going from? Was it VMWare workstation or the free VMWare Server (not ESX or ESXi)? Do they even still have that free Workstation/Server around? Actually, I think they do. I think I had to go digging around for it not too long ago because lazy co-worker couldn't do it himself.

Did I mention the new box I put together months ago? Beastly Intel i7. I upgraded my copy of Workstation from 5.0 to 6.5 and forgot how much I like Workstation in general, but also the new features in 6.5. Unfortunately I figured out after the fact that I should have bought one of the motherboards with six slots instead of four so I could get 12 GB of ram. I'm really wanting that extra memory. Another co-worker tried to convince me to install ESXi instead stating it handles memory Much better, but I do other things on that box. And no, I don't want to make a VM to do that work in. The idea of running Visual Studio 2008 on a Vista x64 just doesn't seem like a good idea.

Bummer about the linux conversion troubles.

I'm still bummed that the one project we were all supposed to support and move to never worked out. I've often thought about trying to resurrect something useful, but I don't think I could convince anyone. Especially with so many other options out there and that are already in place and working.

As much as I miss those days way back when and would love to see a re-birth I am more and more convinced of a few things.

1.) People don't want to bother. They say they have more important things to do and just want to find a pre-made tool to just get the job done.

2.) Slashdot, especially the journal system, is just broke. It would need so much overhaul in terms of scripting or rebuilding the site that the idea doesn't seem worth the work.

3.) 2+1=this one

4.) I don't know, feels like I should have a few more points.

5.) I should mention "Brief" the Firefox extension. I think I'm finally convinced that RSS feeds can actually be an awesome thing. Brief really nails usability. There's a little notification icon in the corner that lights up, and will even offer a pop-up notification. Plus the layout makes consuming the info and weeding out the good and bad really well.

Heck, all we really need is to have everyone be responsible for their own thing, then we keep one central repository for people to post the link and others to subscribe to.

No matter how much planning the action will always be more than one step. There's a START, and a FINISH. Starting guarantees a Finish. Was anything actually confirmed? Just out of morbid curiosity. There should be a record available. I'm not going to dwell on that though. I still run across the picture commemorating our meeting, and of the awesome desserts we partook in. I remember that Mahi Mahi was fantastic, but I can't remember the name of the restaurant or what spices were used for seasoning.

Man, things have changed. I can hardly believe it, but I was piecing things together in my mind and suddenly it seems it has been 5 years. Wow does that make me feel bad. Not to mention I couldn't find the beer we had at that pub. It was an English beer. I thought it was like "Chocolate '67" and then there was a '89 or something.

Gosh, way too much rushed back into active memory. Time to take a deep breathe.

Notepad++ is amazing as is, but it's easily enhanced by either finding or creating Plug-in's. The whole thing is based around Scintilla, which I'm not overly familiar with, but that doesn't really matter at this particular moment. Check it out. Be amazed. And rock on!

No, that would be awesome though. What you have to do is take some USB stick, it's suggested another one that you aren't using for music, download some version check from the site, then upload it to the car. Finally, you bring it back to the computer and take it from there. Yeah, that sounds a bit cumbersome but I don't think it will be that bad. I don't expect to be updating it daily or even monthly.
