Comment Waiting for GPL V4 (Score 2, Insightful) 382

It doesn't seem fair to attack Microsoft with GPL V3 without also going after Google. Google gets to use GPL software without ever having to release source because they're not selling software, they're selling services. If Microsoft did that GPL V4 would come out faster than you can say Free Software.

Submission + - Mpeg2 Editing in Ubuntu Linux

Synchis writes: "I've just switched from Windows to Ubuntu Linux (hooray!), but one of my hobbies is video editing. Is there a frame-level mpeg2 video editing package for linux that is reasonably fast and easy to use? Also, I would love to know what is the best package for authoring DVD's in linux. If I could get these last 2 applications, I would forever be rid of Windows. :)"

iSeal writes: A new vulnerability in Windows Vista has been found, whereby malicious software are able to use the permissions structure in Vista to create what amounts to being a rootkit. By creating dummy account with certain permissions, the malware is able to make itself invisible to the detection of anti-virus/spyware products.

Feed Eye Of The Hurricane Reveals A New Power Source (sciencedaily.com)

In the eye of a furious hurricane, the weather is often quite calm and sunny. But new NASA research is providing clues about how the seemingly subtle movement of air within and around this region provides energy to keep this central "powerhouse" functioning.

Submission + - Spaceport America Takes Off

SeaDour writes: "Spaceport America, being built north of Las Cruces, New Mexico, is finally becoming a reality and is set to become the world's first commercial spaceport. Governor Bill Richardson recently secured 33 million dollars from the state legislature for the final design, and a proposed 0.25% sales tax increase in Dona Ana County, where the facility is to be constructed, is expected to bring an additional 6.5 million dollars per year (if approved by voters next week). Richard Branson, the head of upstart Virgin Galactic, on Monday agreed to lease the facility for 27.5 million dollars over twenty years. If all continues to go as planned, SpaceShipTwo will make its first suborbital joy ride in two to three years."

Politics. Pandering to the idiot vote. For Astrology believers, the 'downgrading' of Pluto was a slap in the face, provoking those feelings of religious outrage which politicians love to exploit. Millions and millions of voters in New Mexico have some sort of belief in Astrology, ranging from slight interest to passionate conviction. Many of those votes have just been guaranteed to those legislators responsible for this bill.

Being enlightened slashdotters, most of us have little appreciation for how stupid people really are. I am here to say that yes, they are that stupid.

Submission + - Finding Employee Numbers With Google

Voelspriet writes: "It's not without faults, hey its even not up to date, but its there. The new command employees in Google shows you the ..number of employees of a certain company. So now you know that Yahoo has more overhead then Google and Lenovo is still smaller then IBM. Wikipedia is the source. Some numbers are from 2004 or even older. There are a lot of omissions, so dont try to look up Slashdots owner OSTG or Indian Railways. I expect this to be one of a long range of new niche commands in Google."
