Journal Journal: Job Board, October 3, 2003 6

There are a couple of additions to the list of useful links (thanks to SamTheButcher):

As of this moment, flipdog appears to be unavailable.

The front page article "How You Were Fired" brought in several new fans. Welcome, and thanks to SiliconJesus for the mention in the comments to that article. I missed the front page story, having had a couple interviews (and spending a lot of time brushing up my skills in some specific areas).

There is one new listing in Employees Wanted this time around, the our first overseas listing for this category. Thanks to jawtheshark.

Positions Wanted. The following individuals are seeking employment. Each listing contains a link to a comment that mentioned the individual's availability, as well as a link to their user page. Please contact these people directly, by e-mail (if they provide a contact address) or by replying to the comment.

  • RevMike has experience with enterprise financial systems, using Java, J2EE, PL/SQL, Pro*C, Perl, and XML. He is located in the New York City/Long Island area.
  • johndiii is a C++ developer with 14+ years of Windows development experience. He is located in the Dallas area.
  • intermodal is also looking for work in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area. He does tech/administrator work for unix, linux, and all versions of windows. He also has Software QA experience. He would also be interested in any fire department that is willing to provide training; he already has experience in that area, being currently with a volunteer department.
  • buffer-overflowed has a variety of experience, including C++ development, Unix and network administration, and help desk, on-site, and desktop support. He is currently located in Charleston, WV, but may be open to relocation.
  • heliocentric is an experienced admin and IT support person in the Harrisburg area. He is particularly interested in working in the information security area, where he has had some past experience. He would also be interested in a position in the Reading area.
  • dubiousdave is an experienced Solaris, Tru64, and Linux admin, living in Austin, Texas. His work experience is primarily on Sun hardware, ranging from ancient workstations to E220s to E6800s. He knows both SunCluster and TruCluster, and, most importantly, makes good coffee.
  • aridhol is a programmer with three years experience in C, C++, and Java, located in Winnipeg. He is a Sun-certified Java programmer with a CS degree from Camosun College in Victoria, BC.
  • Jellybob is looking for a junior sysadmin position in southern England. He has had five years of experience supporting Windows boxes, and three years supporting Linux on both servers and desktops. He also has four years of PHP/MySQL development for web applications and community-based websites, and has a working knowledge of Python. He is willing to learn anything else required.
  • Judg3 is a Windows jack of all trades, specializing in enterprise system and application management and deep level troubleshooting. His strength is taking an assignment and bringing it in on-time and under-budget. He's also at the power-user level with FreeBSD and Linux. There's more detail in the referenced comment, I'd strongly sugest giving it a read. He's looking in the Milwaukee area, land of beer and sausages (mmmmmm, Usinger's), and home of former car salesman Bud Selig.

Employees Wanted. Pretty much the same format. When submitting for this section, please include a link any on-line job listing that is available.

  • SiliconJesus mentioned two positions in his department at Digex. Digex is hiring for other positions as well; the job listings are here.
  • Servo posted an available position in his journal last month. The position is still available, and it sounds like they could really use some help. Here is a direct link to the job listings page; the specific job is Tier II (Site Supervisor) for New York City.
  • FortKnox needs experienced J2EE coders, experienced project management, or experienced business analysts. The experience is an absolute requirement. These are located in the Cincinnati area.
  • According to blinder, his employer, The Seva Group, has an opening for a J2EE developer, with 3+ years of experience including Websphere. The job is at a client site in the Baltimore area. If you are interested, reply to this post or e-mail JobCenter (I can forward the mail to him). Since he just got an unexpected raise, this might be a company worth looking into. Too bad they're not in Dallas.
  • jawtheshark works for Fujitsu Consulting in Luxembourg. Fujitsu has several positions available, including experienced Documentum (enterprise content management) experts, data architects, and entry level IT work. E-mail CVs to slashdot(at)jawtheshark.com; he will direct them to the proper destination. There are positions open in both Belgium and Luxembourg. JTS recommends Luxembourg, for certain financial reasons. I've been reading his journal for a few months now, and I have to say that it sounds like a nice place to live.

The boilerplate:

Thanks to everyone for supporting this effort. If you have an issue with your listing, let me know ASAP (e-mail or IM might be best). If you have a position, are seeking a job, or have comments about the format, please post a reply to this JE. Suggestions are always welcome, by e-mail or by comment. I aim to have every opening or job need mentioned in a JE within 24 hours of my becoming aware of it. Subsequent JEs will repeat entries from prior job boards that are still open. If you have an item listed, please let me know ASAP when it is no longer current. I would love to be able to post a success story or two here!

Update: jawtheshark's entry corrected; the position is not documentation, but "Documentum", an enterprise content management system.

Some useful links:

The last entry was saved with comments disabled. If you notice this at any point in the future, please drop me an e-mail to let me know. This seems to happen sometimes, when I have the JE set to "No Foes". I've noticed that setting change a couple of times when I preview, but I missed it this time.

Several more fans for this account; again, many thanks to everyone who is spreading the word. The latest JE mention that I've seen is from Judg3. Thanks! It is very much appreciated. My apologies if I missed anyone; please fill me in.

I've been trying to make things happen in the real world, hence a bit of a delay in this post. We'll see what happens. There has been some action in the comments, though... Still more fans for this account; many thanks to everyone who is spreading the word. The latest JE mention that I've seen is from the ultra-low-uid Chacham. Thanks! It is very much appreciated. My apologies if I missed anyone; please fill me in.

Update: Sorry, this entry was saved with comments disabled. It does that sometimes when I save, even after setting it to "No Foes". Anyway, comments are now enabled.

I've been feeling more than a bit down, due to my lack of a job. For a bit of perspective, read pythorlh's journal.

The friends/fans list for this account is continuing to grow. I have noticed a couple more sigs with JobCenter links. Thanks! It is very much appreciated. JobCenter also rated an entry in the journal of the very-low-uid Silicon Jesus. My apologies if I missed anyone; please fill me in.

There are a couple of new friends/fans, who had no previous "relationship". I'd be interested to know how you arrived here.

This entry contains one new listing in each category.

The response to this effort has been excellent so far; check out the friends/fans list for this account. Much appreciation to those who have included JobCenter links in their sigs. There are also two journal entries (thanks, Ethelred_Unraed and insanecarbonbasedlif). And, of course, thanks to SolemnDragon for the suggestion that got me started on this.

One more administrative note. I will be making some postings with this account, mostly to help spread the word. I will not be spamming, just using this account for normal, highly insightful and informative posts. If you read one, and agree that it contributes to the discussion, and have some mod points available, a karma boost would be appreciated. At this point, increasing the visibility of the account is important. And now, to the business at hand...

For the time being, this account will friend all of its fans. This may change if it gets too close to the limit.

Also, it seems we have picked up a troll. So, JobCenter is now a subscriber. The default for future journal entries will be "No Foes". I assume that will exclude ACs, but we will see how it works out.

If there is a continuing problem, I will go to "Just Friends and their Friends", or maybe "Just Friends". At that point, if you want to post, either friend JobCenter or send an e-mail.

Journal Journal: Job Networking 6

This account is intended to provide a point of contact for Slashdot users interested in job networking. Journal entries will be posted for job offerings and for job seekers. If anyone has an idea on how to make it more accessible, please let me know. If the demand is there, I will try to generate regular entries concerning employees wanted and positions wanted.

If there is some interest, there could also be consulting jobs.

The more people that know about this, the better, so a sig link would be appreciated.
