Man Builds His Own Subway 174

jerryjamesstone writes "Everybody is into rail these days; it is the greenest way to get around next to a bike. Leonid Mulyanchik has been into it for years since before the Berlin Wall fell, since before the first Macintosh, building his own private underground Metro railway system. English-Russia says that he has been doing it with his pension, that it is all legal and approved and that he is still at it. Gizmodo calls it 'Partly the traditional, inspiring, one man against all odds type of persistence, but more the obsessive, borderline insane persistence.'" Update: 06/02 07:33 GMT by T : And if you're the type to visit Burning Man, you can actually ride a home-made monorail this summer, too.

You know, you're right on the money. I grew up in South Florida, and I'd say the whole Dade-Broward-Palm Beach area is the *best* example of Urban Sprawl in the U.S.

If you're lucky, you escape early enough in live to salvage some sort of career there. After holding six jobs in two years, I've come to believe that people start business in the area with the goal of them closing and declaring bankruptcy within two years.

Submission + - Utah Senate Considering Anti-Cybersquatting Bill (tp1.ca)

soren42 writes: "Utah State Senator Stephen Urquhart, Chairman of the Transportation and Public Utilities and Technology Committee, has proposed the "Utah E-Commerce Integrity Act", a law that creates a stronger deterrent against the practice of cybersquatting. The law also expands the liability for cybersquatting activity to include the registrant's authorized licensee, agent, affiliate, representative, domain name registrar, domain name registry, or other domain name registration authority that knowingly and actively assists a violation of this Act by the registrant. This could potentially set a precedent for similar changes at the federal level."

Comment Re:If you'd read the article - this *is* NOAA. (Score 1) 358

The parents in this thread are exactly right - this is NOAA. Beyond that, NOAA also has the authority if the NOAA Corp, one of the seven uniformed services of the United States. This service is lead by Rear Admiral Jonathan W. Bailey, Director of the NOAA Commissioned Corps and Director of the Office of Marine and Aviation Operations and Rear Admiral Philip M. Kenul, Director of Marine and Aviation Operations Centers. The over 300 officers in this corps have access to the further resources of the US Navy and US Coast Guard. This corps provides a diversity of professionals trained in engineering, earth sciences, oceanography, meteorology, fisheries science, and other related disciplines - all experts in their respective fields, all with something to contribute to the "issue" of climate change.

In fact, the NOAA Corps is now recruiting for its 115th Basic Officer Training Class - expanding personnel in key leadership, expertise, and officer roles. Why do we need to waste more government money on yet another pointless, duplicative program? Task these able-bodied professionals with the job - one they are already undertaking.

Sperm Bank Offers Stimulus Deals 5

Xytex International, a sperm bank, understands that the recession is hitting their customers in the pocket area, so they have started to offer stimulus packages. The packages seem to be purchaser oriented. Clients who want to start a family but are a little short on cash can now buy a vial of sperm at a $200 discount. Donors aren't being offered anything special like a room with chairs made from .50 cal cartridges, slippers that look like bear feet, or a TV with monster truck racing on continuous loop. "We're all feeling the effects of the economy and, especially for families seeking reproductive options, every dollar counts," said Xytex spokeswoman Danielle Moores.

Check If You're Alive With a Text Message 3

andrewm_za writes "South Africa's Department of Home Affairs now encourages citizens to check whether they're deceased, online or by SMS, "to ensure that they have not been fraudulently declared dead on the population register. In an event that a person is registered as Deceased when still alive, they must report with an affidavit from a police station confirming that they are alive." This lack of confidence in their database comes a few years after the online marital status checker which came about after too many people were married to the wrong spouse. Both online checks sorely lack a Turing test."

Submission + - Petition calls for UK government to open source IT

An anonymous reader writes: The UK government website has a petition calling for the source code for government projects to be released under a Free licence. It seems to me that the tax payer should have a right to use the source code they have paid to have developed (except for certain military projects). Shouldn't the citizens also have a right to audit the security of database systems which store their personal information? Does the Slashdot community think that open sourcing government projects will help reduce costs by promoting the use of existing Free projects as the basis for new systems?

Submission + - Why does everyone hate Microsoft?

MrSplog writes: I know this may sound like a somewhat stupid question (I can practically smell the 'idiot' and 'noob' tags coming) however, I'm doing a short project on Microsoft and its impact on society. A considerable part of this project has been looking into people's perceptions of Microsoft and the heavily negative bias of that perception. Slashdot being one of the world's forefront leaders on Microsoft hatred, I wanted to know: just why do you hate Microsoft? Please be as descriptive and as thorough as you like. Counter arguments and positive comments also appreciated (too optimistic?!).
