this is no barrier at all.

The notion that you can somehow legislate away Timmy's ability to see "all that dirty smut" is as captivating as it is corrupting.

We really do need to be more forceful in telling our peers that, NO, you wont succeed in that endeavor, short of completely isolating Timmy from the world, which would do him significantly more harm than the "smut" ever would.

Own up to being fucking parents. Be more active in talking with your children. Understand that "Little Timmy" wont always stay little. If he's looking for porn, you need to eject that notion of him as "an innocent little boy" and put on your grown-up pants, and understand that the "early childhood" part of his life is past now, and you need to adapt your approach.

No amount of Jesus is going to stop that from happening.
Pretending credit cards are only things adults can get is dumb.
Pretending that you can make an effective age verification hurdle (or more accurately, that such hurdles will somehow restrict timmy from porn viewing) is dumb.
Pretending you can dictate "morality" is dumb.

Sorry folks. You actually have to TALK to your kids.

Referring to both. Redis started with free open source code. If that code had been GPLv3, then they would not have been able to change to another licensing scheme unless they dumped all of that GPLv3 code and started from scratch. But also with people using redis would also be forced to keep it free.

I usually side with EFF on most issues, but this is just idiotic misunderstanding. I work in IT security... this ban is about so much more. TikTok is under control of a hostile foreign government. It has already been proven to be a spy application. Because of upgrade policy on most devices, they have been proven to push special updates to only specific devices, they have been proven to be using negative usage statistics to identify points of interest... for example, when thousands or hundreds of thousands of devices are using the app with gps enabled, but right in the middel of a large city there is a dead spot where no one with TikTok is allowed to go, these areas become points of interest without actually providing a single bit of data from within that point of interest. This software is also utilized to push foreign agendas. There is so much wrong with this app being used within our borders and it needs to not be here. Framing this simply in the eye of the users privacy is disingenuous.

I will not rent software and any company that forces me to cloud to subscription based models will be promptly told where to stick it. The next server that I roll out will be proxmox. Every server failure or upgrade will be replaced with proxmox until vmware is gone from my systems. Good riddance. I was on the edge with vmware's tactics even before Broadcom, it didn't take much to push me over the edge.

Manufacturing is a different animal and much easier to police. TikTok is probably spying on the american public AND our government at the same time. They are spying with active data collection techniques as well as negative information spying. The negative spying is the really interesting methods they are using. They are aware that government devices are not allowed to have TikTok installed and via comparing aggregate location data from thousands or hundreds of thousands of devices, they can pick out places of interest that are completely surrounded by TikTok devices, but then in the center is an area where there are none. TikTok is a shill for the CCP and US citizens that continue to use it are clueless as fuck. Our government is clueless as fuck for not banning it before it even got popular.

I don't mind it existing as long as it is labelled appropriately although I am not optimistic in that happening. If something says, beef, pork, chicken or fish, it should be that and only that with the exception of spices. If it is some type of processed meat product with fillers and additives it should not be allowed to use those names. Anything with fillers or meat glue should have to say it on the FRONT label, not hidden in the ingredients.

Why does the manufacturer have any control over it at all once the owner has bought the device? When the manufacturer has more control than the owner, that just means it has malware that needs to be removed straight from the factory. Same with Android, but at least it is easier to rip that shit off and install OS's that honor you as the owner above all else.

I both agree and disagree. Cinnamon is by FAR the best DE out there in my opinion, but I upgrade machines frequently and game with typically bleeding edge hardware. WIth Mint switching to LTS only, it pretty much screwed Mint from being able to support the newest hardware out there without jumping through serious hoops. Now that UbuntuCinnamon is a fully supported variant you get the beauty and usefulness of Cinnamon without being tied to an LTS edition, so you can get that bleeding edge hardware support from the normal 6 month release cycle. The only downside of UbuntuCinnamon being a fully supported variant now is that they had to support snaps which can go straight to hell. Bloated from including all dependencies for every app over and over, slow, incomplete desktop theming support, inability to control when and where upgrades happen, and the buy in for the whole android or iphone app store mindset. Fuck that. Deb files in repos or GTFO. Thank God it is relatively painless to rip the entire snap ecosystem out of the machine right after you install it.

Giving people control over their own devices does not break Apple devices. It only breaks their business model. It shouldn't even be a question for owners to be the sole decision maker over their devices whether it is phones, cars, tv's, media players, gaming consoles or anything. It really should be regulated by law that companies cannot over ride the owners wishes and that all devices must be shipped with a way to lock the manufacturer out entirely if the owner wishes to do so. Choice is never bad. Many people will choose to continue giving Apple or Google that control, but it should NEVER be forced on the owner of any device.

And this is utterly irrelevant. The owner of a device should not have to fight with the manufacturer to do whatever the fuck they want to do with that device even if the decision is bad for them or their device in the long run. If a manufacturer has more control of it than the owner, then the device is pre-loaded with malware from the factory even if that malware is the legitimate software products of that manufacturer. That is a huge issue with software and devices today.... treating the owner as if they are the thing that needs to be protected against.
